Hard Slam 2: The Art of Daily Driver Lowness

How long before it becomes retro?

In todays world of political correctness, there is no such thing as an old car or a banger or a nail or even bangernomics. You've either got a normal car, or if its a bit shonky, then it immediatly becomes retro, a 'project' or a 'runaround'. Not runaround is the best - even if its your only car and you dont have an Elise in the garage you can still use the term 'runaround' even though it sees exactly the same use as next doors 1 year old Focus, becuase hey, runaround is more palatable than saying 'My car sucks'.

I'm actually quite a fan of the e36 in general, but I wouldn't want anything less than a stock, clean 328i, which is going to be bloody rare now. Toyota looks great though.

Retro isn't an age, it's an attitude.

That E36 is solidly Retro in my eyes. A stock one isn't.

How is it retro? It's just an old E36 with unsuitable wheels and no supension. What's the point? It's otherwise totally stock, so it just looks like some ***** is driving around with knackered suspension, scraping his sump, bumpers, exhaust etc on every dip and rise in the road as he goes aslong.

An early E30 kitted out in the same way might be considered "retro" though, but not something from the mid 90s :p

Ahhhh but it looks cool, who cares if you brake your spine and have the most uncomfy drive everywhere :)

Retro: "Retro is a term used to describe the culture of the past."

Surely "culture of the past" is so subjective? Yesterday is the past, so therefore you could class even a brand new car as "retro" as long as you have this "attitude"?

What exactly is the "retro attitude" all about? What character traits would somebody with the attitude possess?

Bingo.

'Retro' (capital R) encompasses everything from vintage/prewar to virtually new.

It encompasses ideas, themes and aesthetics from a multidtude of secular 'scenes' and pools the best of those together.

It is inclusive. Not exclusive.

What exactly is the "retro attitude" all about? What character traits would somebody with the attitude possess?

It's not about people. It's about cars ;)

Ahh, the old "but you don't understand" scapegoat.

I've explained the concept countless times to both you and Fox.

Any further claims to 'not understand' or statements which are abjectively contrary can therefore only arise from one of two conditions:

1, the person making the statement fully understands the concept and is merely trolling.

2, the person making the statement lacks the intellectual fortitude to understand the concept.

To be honest if you have to explain why it qualifies for "retro slammin'" status then it probably isn't. All I see is an otherwise bog standard 3-series BMW that's been lowered too much with the wrong offset wheels on.

Big difference between that and, say, a Golf with the German/Euro retro look, like this for example:

I don't recall you giving me a full explanation of this so called "concept". I only recall being accused of "not getting it". Maybe you could refresh this thick old troll's memory?

It's the same thing! Taking the styling cues usually given to watercooled VWs and using them on a BMW!

'Looks' and marque-specific.

It's not the same thing at all imo.

Whilst retro/slammed isn't my cup of tea that Golf looks 100 times better than that pos BMW. Delocked, debadged, colour-coded, smoked lenses - it looks the part, whereas that BMW could be any bog-standard car picked up off Autotrader and the wrong size wheels stuck on it. It looks incomplete and generally toss. E36 318s have no pedigree, they're ten a penny.
