Harry and Meghan to resign

Let’s just get rid of the royal family and their unearned privilege all together.

There we go job done taxpayer saved some money that can be freed up to be wasted elsewhere and everyone can carry on with their lives.

Your welcome :).

But won't Harry require protection still? Costing the taxpayer anyway.

Does it really matter to you? The taxpayers money is and has been wasted for many years. If he gives up the protection, benefits, titles etc will it make your life any better? The answer will most likely be no you it wouldn’t change your life in anyway what so ever.

Typically just the media rallying up the troops.

I dont see what the major issue is, Was he ever getting on the throne? No probably not, Stepping down doing his own thing and taking less money out the tax payers pot (maybe not now but in the future) is a good thing and good on them. The rest of the "royal family" that serve no great purpose (Anne Andrew and Edwards lot) should take a leaf out of their book, anyone who is double digits or greater in line for the job should be left to fend for themselves

He can't give it up, he could be called Harry Windsor and move into a semi-detached and still have 24/7 protection.

the security cost was a disproportionate % of the wedding cost, whether that is somewhat true of the ongoing liability.

... liked the way the apparently 8month old, is just left with the 'nurse', for what, a week.

@stuie

I think that is part of the issue (for them), they’re paranoid about how things come across etc... want members of the firm to stay non political, want to coordinate announcements etc... I doubt they’ll be too happy about a high profile, now non-Royal but still Royal couple being detached from the rest and potentially campaigning on stuff more, being more vocal about different issues etc... and of course just all the usual questions that get raised re: “what’s the point of the royals” etc...

Potential for the couple to get torn apart on the press re: anything publicly funded now.

That isn’t clear - while obvs he won’t be moving into a semi detached the Queen has other grandkids (inc royal princesses) who don’t have police protection (in terms of actual protection officers) but rely on private security and the fact their residences (royal palaces) have protection.

Did Diana have protection after she divorced?

She lost her police protection IIRC - at the time of her crash the driver was a hotel employee (IIRC) and her bodyguard was hired privately.

Obvs she still lived in a royal palace so her home was protected when her kids stayed and they’d have had protection officers.

You wouldn't be free to waste the savings elsewhere. You would be paying more tax to make up for the money the royal family bring into the UK economy. They're a business who make money for the UK at the cost of a few quid per person, whether you like them or not.

*You're welcome.

So that just renders this thread pointless then.

I think your confusing me for someone who actually cares.

I'll start here:
Divorcee, older, american, entertainer, Hollywood "Star", dysfunctional family, demanding.
Hell, half the royal staff appointed to her quit in the first year.
She was never going to fit in.
It's like a round of bullseye seeing his exes, "look at what you could have won".

She does seem to have been a bit demanding etc.. "what Meghan wants Meghan gets" etc...

Not exactly uncommon for some bloke to marry and the wife to draw him away from family and friends - it's just in this case they're Royals...

Dysfunctional - are you having a laugh. What would you classify the Windsors as? Andrew likely nonced for years, Harry might be a soldier's son, they like their cousins a little too much....

and yet she has "fit in" perfectly fine.
