HD2900 pro overclocking thread.

I did a clean reinstall of XP on Monday, and so far no black screens or reboots....:)
The fresh install I did a few days ago deffo helped me, was getting some weird issues with the screen blanking out followed by a computer lockup before while running 3Dmark but that hasn't happened since.

Hopefully my 520W Modstream will be ok, 28A 12v rail.......
Hopefully, but I'm beginning to suspect my own Antec Trio 550w is not quite able to cope. I guess it depends on how old it is as these things do seem to weaken over time. . .

Not sure if the HD2900XT I am using draws more power than a HD2900Pro?

Right, whacked it straight to XT clocks 740/825 get around 9100 in '06.

Core temp is at 70°C full load and idles at 54°C and its actually very quiet! I have no idea why they have been complained about!

So far impressed for £160 delivered!

Hi,

Edited: Had a look back through this thread and seems your score is about right for the CPU.... Difference in actual game FPS is far less compare to a C2D than in 3dmark.

Enjoy

Hi,

I can't be sure but that does look a little low for a 3dmark. My C2D @ 3.2 gets pretty much bang on 11000 so the 2000 difference seems a little excessive.

Which drivers are you using? the Cat 7.9's or the ones on the disk

TBH I'd expect that from stock Pro settings, I think I got around 9700 with a C2D 600 /800

Regards

Its the CPU, it not only effects the score in the CPU benchmark but his fps will be lower in the other benchies because of it, its well bottle necking the card.

my 3dmark score is a mere 7400. really need to overclock my cpu but the akasa cooler only keeps the chip @ around 45-48 oC @ idle :(

My XP install when I installed my 2900 Pro last week was about 11 months old, and I was using Nvidia drivers all that time, I ran Drive Cleaner Pro etc to remove old Nvidia drivers, then fitted new 2900 Pro.

I got the occassional black screen (system still running) and the occassional reboot...but not while running 3DMark06 or any games, just browsing etc....anyway I tried different things, but still got the black scrrens etc, then I did a clean reinstall of XP on Monday, and so far no black screens or reboots....:)

Think I was a bit premature in saying the above, as the black screen has occured again, see This thread. :)

WTH?!
im sensing something vastly wrong here...check these results. card clocked @ 752/909 with ATi Tool:

3DMark Score 7410 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 3202 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 3927 Marks

CPU Score 1516 Marks

surely a CPU doesnt limit the SM scores?

here's the rest,

1 - Return to Proxycon 26.48 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 26.892 FPS

CPU Tests
CPU1 - Red Valley 0.478 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley 0.769 FPS

HDR Tests
1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 44.483 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 34.059 FPS

Max temp during the tests was 59 oC, fan @ 38%
On a side note, does the demo version of 3dMark06 give me lower marks that the retail as a sneaky way to get me to purchase it ? ;)

I would check that your pci-e is set to at least 100mhz MANUALLY in the bios. As it may have slipped back into 1x mode instead of 16x eek. Try setting it to 101 first though, then re-run the tests.

Other than that, after re-trying the 3dmark after the bios change, o/c the chip slightly and see if it adds that much to the score. Don't forget the cpu supplies the gpu with data, so if it can't keep up, the scores will be pretty low, regardless of the individual CPU score.

C2D @ 1.8Ghz

Main Test Results 750/900
3DMark Score 7905 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 3465 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 4197 Marks
CPU Score 1589 Marks

C2D @ 3.3Ghz 750/900
Main Test Results

3DMark Score 11248 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 4774 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 5203 Marks
CPU Score 2892 Marks

The SM scores do benifit from the CPU though the FPS difference in games is less

is this the main system bios accessed during startup? i checked in there and the only PCI related screen was to do with UPnP...windows configures it...

thanks for the comparisons decto, will have to get a new cpu cooler asap and get overclocking

It probably won't in that screen, it will be under configuration or more likely on the same screen as where you overclock your CPU :)

oh dear this whole bios thing is beyond me!
gonna overclock the cpu and re-run tests. performance in games is pretty flawless so the card is fine. but i want higher 3dmark06 scores... it bothers me!

Don't see the point in flashing, just overclock via rivatuner. Besides if I flashed the XT BIOS, I'd still have to use rivatuner to clock it higher, so whats the point? :P

Just so the default of xt values would be there in the event you couldn't be bothered to reinstall rivatuner or whatever.

Still want a bios editor like nvbitor so can adjust voltage and memory timings etc.

Im gonna give OCing mine a go later... going to use ATI Tool. Just to clarify, although it probably already been said, i dont NEED the 8 pin plugged in? just 2 x 6 will do?

Going to go for XT speeds to start with, see how it goes and report back later!

2 x 6pin will be fine for overclocking, the 8 pin just enables the overclocking feature in CCC. You can oc using AtiTool or Riva without

Right, going to install mine later this evening, can I just swap cards if I have an X1800XT, or do I need to uninstall the catalyst drivers?
