HD2900 pro overclocking thread.

Just setup my X38 witjh crossfire 2900Pros, I get 14500 in 3D Mark06 with the 2900s @ stock and the Q6600 @ 3.0. Will take the Q6600 to 3.6 shortly and then the 2900's to XT speeds.

Just a note of interest the HX620w works brilliantly with no issues at all running crossfire, q6600, 3 x hd, dvd etc.

How are you guys overclocking?

As with my current X1800XT the AMDGPUtool doesn't recognise the card, ATI tool crashes and only lets me scan for artifacts (i.e. can't change clocks etc), Rivatuner works, but not sure if it changes the clocks?

Will things change with the R600?

It's a full-fat *stock* 2900XT but I figured some of you may find it useful as a baseline which you can work towards (and beat!) :D

Catalyst™ 7.9 Display Driver for Windows XP

Need a quick reply from any 2900 user. What's the best drivers for XP? 7.9's or 7.10 beta?.

I've just installed my card after a busy day and I'm overjoyed that it's running (so far) on a single 22Amp 12v rail. The next test is a 3d workout with 3d06 and then on to see how much I can overclock till my PSU dies :o (hopefully not!!).

Scrolling the forums with no drivers is horrible.

Hi,

You're PSU's holding up.... hope for my Enermax then :)

I've used both the Cat 7.9 and the Cat 7.10 Beta 3 , no issues with either and no real noticable change in performance.

Just make sure you get the CCC pack as the card has built in audio and some other device so it will need more than the basic video driver.

The installation of the audio driver will also default your system audio to HDMI so you'll have to set that back in the control panel.

Keep us posted and best of luck !!

Enjoy

Yeah, so far lol :D. Your Enermax should be fine :).

I'll stick to the 7.9's and see how that goes till the final release of the 7.10 drivers arrive. I was going to just put the display drivers in and use ATI tool because I only have the 2x 6 pins in using molex's. If I have to use CCC then I will but I won't be able to overclock then?.

Thank you for the positive feedback ;).

John

You can still overclock even if CCC is installed, you just have to use RivaTuner or ATI tool. It's only the CCC overclock tool that is disabled.

I think you can get the additional drivers seperately in from ATI but it is easier just to install the CCC pack and then if you like you can tell CCC not to run automatically.

Once you're happy with an XT class OC, flashing to the XT bios is well recommended. Only took me a few minutes and now it runs at stock XT without any OC tools

I get mine on Tuesday (Sapphire 512mb) but I'm hoping to just be able to run the thing with my aged single 12volt rail PSU, never mind overclock it :o. I have access to a friends 700watt if things go wrong so no matter what, it should be ok to OC and see what I get.

I really hope I can at least get XT speeds as it's a lot further apart (core and memory) compared to the X1900XT and XTX is. I got past XTX speeds but not a lot further with having to drop memory for a better core clock and lower clock for better memory clock. If I can hit 800+ Mhz on the core then I'll be laughing. I can't wait to fiddle again, I just hope my initial test with my PSU doesn't kill some parts whilst it goes Snap, Crackle, POP! :D.

Edit:

Nice clock HillBilly2. I take it you just wanted XT speeds and are happy to be running at that?. If so then see how far you can push it like Decto has done :).

Well done Decto :). I just hope my Sapphire can scale as nicely.

Did your Sapphire come with any converters for molexes to 6-pin?

My psu only has one 6-pin connector :(

Bad news :(. PSU is not up to the job at stock. Three total PC shut downs. Once on the Canyon test and then whilst on World in Conflict and finally whilst browsing so it's out until I get my m8's OCZ 700watt PSU tomorrow if his 1200watt effort arrives.

World in Conflict didn't feel too different. Should I notice a difference at 2.8Ghz or is my lack of RAM maybe a factor? :o. No DriverCleaner ran and an old'ish install of XP to go by so I might install XP on a partition and then bench my XT at stock and OC'd. Then the Pro stock & OC'd and see how they compare for me.

When I get the PSU 2moro I will benchmark first with the display driver only and then I will try with the CCC. If there's hardly any improvement then I'll go back to just using the display driver as I've done it this way through all my ATI cards.

I will be trying the BIOS though after some serious stress testing at XT speeds. I hope I get a good OC!!.

Yes, two?. I already had one in my machine for the X1900 and I've got another lying about somewhere so 4 in total now.

If you need one then my email is in trust. Forward me a sending address and I'll pass one down to you for nothing. I won't be able to post it till Thursday afternoon though.

Oh Dear, but if it makes you feel any better I have had two or three system restarts in the past 24 hours!

None of them have been while I am gaming, just surfing etc? At the moment I am just doing a complete test on my Samsung hard disk in case it has gone bad but actually I think the real reason is my Antec TruePower Trio 550w is struggling to feed the HD2900XT!

Think I may re-install my X1950XT for 24 hours and see if that helps, I have a big PSU on order so that should be with me in a day or two.

Regarding overclocking these cards (on WInXP machine) I can't get any of the normal tools working, ATI Tray Tools is showing me the wrong info for GPU/Mem speeds and ATI Tool won't even start lol! :D

My XP install when I installed my 2900 Pro last week was about 11 months old, and I was using Nvidia drivers all that time, I ran Drive Cleaner Pro etc to remove old Nvidia drivers, then fitted new 2900 Pro.

I got the occassional black screen (system still running) and the occassional reboot...but not while running 3DMark06 or any games, just browsing etc....anyway I tried different things, but still got the black scrrens etc, then I did a clean reinstall of XP on Monday, and so far no black screens or reboots....:)

Sounds good, reinstall is the way forward lol.

I would also try recording all your important settings, and then reseting the bios before doing a reinstall. (Wierd I know, but has worked on my Asrock board before).

JD,

Bad news on your PSU but at least you have another on the way. I don't think your 1GB will help you much, I was running that in my AMD system recently and found that an increase to 2GB made things much smother especially at higher details settings. Audibly less HDD thrashing too.

Enjoy

2gb helps massively in bf2, and games like stalker on the higher settings it seems pretty much like a requirement unless you want constant hard disk access :(

Matthew
p.s. I'm stuck on 1gb ddr lol
