Heads-up on HE400i on sale

I have ordered those, would my mobo be able to supply enough juice to them.
Here's some basic spec that they advertise:

ROG SupremeFX 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC S1220A
- Dual Headphone Amplifiers
- Impedance sense for front and rear headphone outputs
- Supports : Jack-detection, Multi-streaming, Front Panel Jack-retasking
- High quality 120 dB SNR stereo playback output and 113 dB SNR recording input

It should power them fine, they don't need much and I run them fine from my FiiO X1 DAP.

They will sound better from a decent DAC and Headphone amp though, no matter what the manufacturers claim, on-board audio is just not going to be as good as an external Amp and DAC, not until they start using up a significant amount of board space for using fully discrete components (which is not going to happen any time soon).

Hey Folks went into Richer Sounds today and had a listen to the Oppo's and Shures SRH1540. These tests was from an Iphone 7 so the results would not of been great and not would have give the best performance. I listened to the same tracks on the 2 cans and can say i wasn't impressed by the Oppo's the Bass was not the type i was after it was kind of flat so then the. Shures all i can say is WOW. All i can say they was the ones for me really deep and low. Pricey at £399 but my friend got me them for £350.So tommorow ill be having a good few hours with these as im busy tonight so wont have much of a chance to really settle them in but couldn't believe the difference the minute i put them on

Really shouldn't have selected free delivery!
Only got dispatched Friday morning so not due till Tuesday :o

On a slightly separate subject would the Magni 3 serve the HE400i and HD650s well?
I know from a little experience that some amps sound awful with certain headphones (X1's particularly) so I'm trying to find the best all rounder.

Reports say the Magni 3 is smoother than the Magni 2 and plenty powerful, so yes, it should be a good match for both - I hope so anyway as I will probably be getting one for driving my HE400i & HD650 :D

Which headphone do you prefer then Rids the HD650's seem to get the most praise

Since I got the HE400i, the HD650s haven't left the mug tree and I've put close to 100 hours on the HE400is :D

The HiFiMans have much better (much faster and more impactful) bass, more detailed highs and the mids aren't far behind the HD650s. Add to that far better imaging (in all directions) plus they are easier to drive and you have one hell of a headphone.

So I think yes, I would pick them over the HD650

Magni 3 if you want clear, uncolored sound and Vali 2 if you wish to add your own coloration via tube rolling. Apparently the stock tubes are not great and you can improve the sound quite a bit with better tubes BUT they do cost more money.

Out of intrest how much are the Tubes Rids and where would you purchase them would you get them from Schiit them selfs or elsewhere?

I bought a pair of used Mullard 6DJ8, which I use in my Aune T1, for £18 including delivery off ebay but you can spend hundreds on rarer tubes that are widely known for their top class sound quality.

I had a first batch of 400i's which sounded different to what's out their today. It sounded like a mini HE-500 and pretty close in performance, performed better than the HD650 on lower end stuff. I think the current HE-400i is a downgrade to the HD650 but at £180 it's priced about right and a solid choice.
