Heroes of the Storm

In what ways is this different to dota?

1. No gold. So no items. Experience is global (so each hero levels at the same speed on a team.)

2. Heroes start with basic skills all unlocked, then get an ultimate skill later. Every 3 levels you get to choose between a list of upgrades (stuff like increase AOE of a spell, lower mana, passive attack speed boost etc) that allow you to build characters in a variety of ways

3. There are several different maps that have a number of different objectives.

4. Jungle creeps when conquered then join the lanes and attack the enemy base.

5. No last hitting (and therefore no denying) You just get XP when creeps die.

6. It follows the LOL model of having to purchase heroes for money/in game gold with a rotating pool of heroes available to play free each week

7. Games are much shorter (20-25 mins ish) and a lot more action-packed.

So really it's far less tactical, more action-y throughout stripped down dota.

After putting some more hours into it I've gotta say I like it a lot.
The whole lack of last hitting or item buying doesn't seem to affect skill cap much.
The game is easier to get into, however, there is still a massive difference between just good and very skilled players (ie, cloaked characters can actually be seen if you look very well - so many times I've followed in invis and instantly killed enemy novas/zeratuls it's hilarious) . The mechanics are still there and combat is also very fluid and fast paced.

The talent system is, I would dare to say, offers more possibilities than itemization like in LoL. In League of Legends, you would find mostly that the only difference between items for a certain champion (with most having very limited builds) is having more mr or armor - it's a situation difference but doesn't really make a huge gameplay difference, whereas the talent system can totally change the way you play your hero.

There seems to be a lot of possibilities for synergy of talents and different heroes as well so I'd be interested to see how meta shapes up. I'm fairly certain each team would want at least one healer as they seem to quite strong.

I've played a lot of different heroes to lvl5 and it seems that pretty much all of them can be very viable and have very defining strengths.

If anyone is wondering whether they should buy the founders pack or not, I have to say that if you like mobas you should definitely go for it - I myself have got a free beta key but have not hesitated to spend £20.00 for 2 heroes and xp booster just after few hours. The game seems to be extremely polished for a beta.

Also, if anyone is interested in the performance, I'm running it all maxed out on 1920x1200 with just 6950 and haven't noticed the slightest bit of lag/fps drop yet so pretty sure it would run fine even on older systems.

When you 1st start playing, it may seem less tactical, but the more you play, the more you realise its very team based. you will gain nothing if you try to solo kill.

unlike Dota where a hero can snowball out of control and dominate everyone on the map.

The faster pace in HOTS is a nice welcome compared to lol/dota2. theres no phases where you spend a good 10-15min just farming jungle.

I have hardly touched my dota2 since playing this. :D

and yes if you dont have it, then the founders pack is worth it. ( get 3 heroes, 1 mount, 2.5k gold and access)

I disagree with the founders pack being worth it. You get 3 pretty meh heroes, the mount looks good but thats about it.

I bought a key for £7 online since I really wanted to play it.

I really enjoyed this for a couple of weeks but already find myself bored of it. The faster games is really nice, its one of my peeves with dota and lol. But the game really doesnt reward individual skill all that much and is very zergy. You can get the jump on an enemy hero with two of you and half the time they can just walk away back through their gate to heal etc.

Its all about the team fighting and capping objectives/mercs inbetween which is fine but it does get old quick. Or has in my case anyway. Every match feels very samey now.

Well it's there for people who want access to the game right now, people asked for an option to buy in and Blizzard gave it, the bundle was the same price without getting access anyway right? It might be 3 pretty meh heroes to you but some would enjoy them and you also get a skin for each also.

Paying £30 for beta access and 3 heroes is insanity. 2500 gold is not that much. I've got 10k in a couple of days of play. Dota 2 has 109 heroes for free, how much should they charge? People should not encourage this sort of behaviour from producers :(

The bundle was still that price anyway...no one is forcing people to buy it, why shouldn't they use the model? It worked great for the most POPULAR MOBA, Blizzard made the game to rake in cash, the model works.

The business model that LoL uses isn't the reason that its popular. Sure it works but its by no means good for the players.

Its also pretty known that the bundle on its own is a horrible deal especially compared to the Nexus Bundle for example. We are discussing if its good value... its not.

I didn't mind paying for the bundle. It isn't a bad price just the heroes are rather Meh. Raynor is OK and Tyrande is very good but Diablo is just crap.

When you look at the price of heroes individually you are paying between £6-8 a hero so its £18 at the cheapest, Plus a mount, Plus 3 skins Plus 2500 gold (That amount was crappy) then beta access. Based on those prices its not a bad deal but the deal overall could be better.

Altought I would rather they did what Smite has done and you pay a flat fee for all of the heroes then just purchase gems (Gold) To buy chests and get skins at random (Never duplicates)

I never said it was bad for Blizzard, but as I'm not a Blizzard shareholder weirdly I'm talking about if it is good for players, which it clearly isn't.

Except it actually is good for players if they want access to the beta, some people would have payed more just to get in, it all depends on how badly you want to play the game.

Is the bundle a good value for people who already have access to the game? Not really.

If you can get a key cheaper elsewhere, I'd have done it.

What I was trying to say is that the game is definitely worth spending £30-40 on and if you can't get a key elsewhere, it is not a big price to pay for the access to game out of which you'd get a lot of hours of gameplay.

On the other hand the nexus bundle is an amazing value right now altho it only included 2 heroes which I liked so I've passed on it and bought them separately.
