Holidays 2022

We finally managed to have our 2-year delayed trip to the US a few weeks ago, the Covid LFT you have to take a day before flying was a little nerve wracking but we got the all clear and flew out to LAX from Heathrow via Virgin Atlantic the following morning. Spent 6 days in California (in Hollywood, near Universal Studios) and then flew on to Hawaii (Oahu) for a further 9 days.

Had an absolutley brilliant time.

A few highlights:

Studio Tour at Universal Studios, lasts about an hour and is probably the best attraction in the park.
Wandering around Universal Citywalk in the sunshine, brought back memories of doing the same in Florida a few years back.
Santa Monica Beach and Pier, was nice to get out and see a bit of the country/urban sprawl on the train but that subway ride to get to the overland train connection made us feel a little uneasy to say the least.
Tour of the TCL Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard was great (tour guide was from High Wycombe funnily enough) although the Hollywood Walk of Fame itself was disappointing.

Arriving at the hotel in Waikiki, looking out the window and seeing the beautiful beach, palm trees and turquoise waters of the pacific a stones throw away.
Pearl Harbor, trip out to the USS Arizona memorial and then a couple of hours spent touring the USS Missouri was fantastic.
Hiked up to Diamond Head Crater, stunning views from the top although if you plan on going make sure you book an entry time slot in advance (you can't just turn up anymore which confused a hell of a lot of people).
The Island tour was fun, the tour guides and drivers there are great, just make sure you're not the last person back on the tour bus.
Honolulu itself is a great place to just wander around in, loads of shops and great restaurants. Best meal I had was probably in Duke's at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort.

Flew back into LGW Sunday gone, was in Tenerife for 2 weeks. Thankfully our flights and airport journey was smooth and no delays but a friend doing the same journey from Manchester was delayed both ends.

TUI on the way out and TITAN on the way back, quiet a lot of leg room for a short haul package flight.

The holiday blues are in full swing this week

My brother was going on holiday next week - outbound flight has been cancelled - no alternatives, they'll only cover 1/3rd of his losses for accommodation etc.... unless return flight gets cancelled will lose money on that as well (or something like that - I'm not 100% on all the details).

I need some help! I’ve never had an all inclusive holiday, but I think I fancy one. 7 nights, on a beach, within 5 hours flight time of Glasgow. There are lots, but how do you people pick where to go?! It’s very overwhelming. Any suggestions? I’m also very nervous about a terrible buffet dinner. Are they actually good for food, or just designed to fill you up?
I reckon Canary Islands or Turkey would be best for heat…
Must be adult only, reckon around £1k pp is reasonable and early September.

No travel insurance?

Some AI don’t have any local cuisine as cater for the ‘I am not eating any foreign muck’ lot.

My parents took a last minute holiday to Rhodes and the AI hotel’s food in the evening was chips, pizza, chips, chicken nuggets….. so they visited a restaurant 5 mins down the road, every night. It was packed, local cuisine and had other hotel guests as fed up of the chips.

I always try the local stuff for breakfast. I don’t understand why many people fight over the cornflakes.

any of them are fine.

Done AI in Turkey/tenerife/lanzarote etc - All decent and perfectly fine.

Food is buffet style and usually no issues - it's not top end fine dining, but it's certainly not rubbish. Same with AI drinks - beer/lager is usually local stuff but perfectly fine for round the pool and a few at night.

Some more "premium" than others but also some hotels let you upgrade your drinks to branded stuff.

Was all inclusive I think? He always rated it, nice scenery.

First flight delayed by 2h so we miss the connection still sitting here about to board the rebooked flight 5h later
8h so far. Be in the hotel by midnight I hope....
Great start to the trip :p

FFS, one of my colleagues just tested positive, plus I am being forced in to the office Mon/Tues next week because some bigwigs from international head office are in, I was planning to WFH all next week to keep myself covid clear for my test the following Saturday for my cruise on the Sunday.

If I get covid from the office or commute, I will be livid.

Looks like no need for testing now for USA from Sunday night

Countries Without Any Travel Restrictions Or Entry Requirements

Good site here if you want to choose a destination like the good old times before Covid.

Brits have been warned an easy passport mistake could get you banned from the European Union.
One rule means you must get your passport stamped every time you enter and exit an EU nation.

Brits could be banned from the EU for a simple passport mistake.

Passengers have been urged to make sure their passports are stamped before they return to the UK.

The rule has been implemented because another post-Brexit regulation means Brits are only allowed to stay in the EU for 90 days over a 180-day period.

But without getting an exit stamp, there is no way of telling how long you have been in the EU for.

This could cause issues for travellers, while they could also be banned from flying for a period of time.

Why would UK immigration care how long you stayed in a foreign country for in relation to the 90 day limit when re-entering the UK ?

You're entering your country of citizenship

Heads up everyone, Covid still exists and I got it at some point on the way back from holiday. Just bear it in mind, it’s not got any nicer. Didn’t impact our holiday though (which was awesome) make sure you are insured though, no need to spend time in a “quarantine facility” paid for by yourself which can still happen. Happy travels all!

Flying out to Vegas for the 3rd time in 7 months (I know I know) and the only stressful part now is the day of travel rather than the day before

Will be reviewed every 90 days apparently but I'm just happy they've finally caught up with the rest of the world in respect of a testing requirement for vaccinated travellers to the US.

They don't. They're just advising that if you don't get your exit stamp, you may be refused entry to the EU in future.
