Home Assistant beginners

Bit yet another bullet and just ordered a 4 pack of zigbee smart plugs off ebay for £29.99. I'll probably replace a couple of the WiFi smart plugs that are nearby to 'build up' the zigbee mesh

I am confused slightly. I am getting 20-30 LQI on this motion sensor, but the occupancy just doesn't trigger. When I move it a little closer, works fine

What Zigbee channel are you on? I changed mine to one outside of the Wi-Fi range and it helped signal quality a fair bit. Lqi of 20 is very low and zigbee should be able to cover a fair distance.

Just looking at my zigbee devices, the lowest lqi is 132 and that’s a hue bulb out in the garden.

It was on 11 but I've put it on 25 yesterday

It's definitely not as easy no. But there's blueprints for the hue controls and stuff to make life a lot easier. Plus you can make the hue dimmers control anything you want, like blinds, bathroom extractor fan etc :D

Hmm, that is tempting then. Can you do stuff like the "hue" button on the remote cycling through scenes?

Yeah that's definitely possible, although may require some manual tuning to make it work. Someone will have done it on the HA forums either way :D Can also have things like turning on lights/scenes for a room from the button change for the time of day, I do this with my bathroom lights, so after 11pm the lights will turn on dimmed from the switch, but during the day/evening they will be full brightness, although I will eventually be going back to a motion sensor in the bathroom.

The possibilities are endless. Always good to flick through the HA subreddit or the forums to get some ideas.

Hmm OK... I guess the integration with Google home is similar as well? My parents shout at Google home a lot

Has anyone moved from a hub based setup (ie Hive, Hue) to Home Assistant entirely? I know I can do so but I worry that if HA goes down that basics such as heating and lighting go down as well. If you’ve made such a move, what’s your backup plan if HA goes **** up?
