Horizon: Forbidden West

I've got this game coming tomorrow, can't wait as it looks incredible.

In saying that I lost interest in Zero dawn after about 10 hours, has anyone enjoyed Forbidden West while not really getting on with the first game?

I haven't completed it yet, but I am level 50 and I think I have one mission left.

A few things spring to mind which annoy me:
  • Combat is annoying when there are multiple enemies. You seem to spend most of the time on your arse. Single enemies are fine.
  • Cauldron puzzles aren't particularly difficult, but they're annoying, repetitive and feel fake. Like the devs added them as an afterthought.
  • Constant loot grinding for upgrades from machines. The drop rates are super low and once you clear a load of machines of a particular type and you still need more parts, you can't go to a nearby shelter and rest for them to respawn. You have to travel somewhere via fast travel or a campfire, just seems really odd. To fully update a legendary bow as an example could take several hours.
  • I found level 25-35 or really difficult, once at 35 and I had more skill points to use and had better armour and weapons it's now gone the other way and feels a little too easy. Unless of course there's multiple enemies.
  • Navigating underwater, especially if it's tight is a ball ache. Sometimes you can barely see anything at all.
  • The hunting ground and other challenges feel more like you're playing a game of chance with RNG.
  • Some of the NPCs are just plain annoying.
  • In group fights, NPCs throw ammo on the floor. Sometimes I have literally no idea where the ammo is.

I'm sure there's more.

Also how do I do bullet points on this new forum software? Edit, figured it out manually but not having a toolbar for bullet points is annoying.

Oh, another thing. Doing a combo of some form and then switch to a bow and hit the enemy. Yeah, perfect in a training dummy. Not on something that moves!

I enjoyed the first game a lot more if I’m honest.

OOh that's not good. Although maybe as someone that didn't like the first game I might prefer this one.

What is it about the first that you preferred?

I've just seen your list of things you dislike in Forbidden West but is there a main thing you preferred in Horizon Dawn?

Granted I'm only at the start but on performance mode I don't feel it's a huge leap graphically from the original. It's the fuzzy looking greenery I think.

Stronger and more interesting story line. For its time the visuals were phenomenal. Simpler upgrade/combat mechanics. Far less of a grind.

Play the first game and DLC, then stop. Without the original lead writer the best they could come up with was
space aliens being chased by space A.I
. The entire world was at war against the machines and that's the best they could think of.

Finished this last night on hard difficulty. Got it on release. 7/10, not as good as the first so a little disappointing. Aloy’s character and voice acting not a patch on Naughty Dog games tbh. Still a decent game though.

I’m about 20 hours in and playing it right now. Enjoying it a lot. Way less jank than the first game and the facial animations are much improved. Story good so far.

I'm waiting for the 40fps/120Hz patch to drop before replaying with a New Game +

The recent patch has really improved the graphical fidelity in Performance mode too.

Completely agree. There is something about the acting and voice that is just...off? Cant put my finger on it but the voice acting does not flow right. Compare it to any naughty Dog game and its lacking at best.

Yeah it is good. And the mocap and sync work is top notch. Shame about the poor script in pt2

Weirdly I never got round to playing the second one. Think some of the reviews I read at the time put me off but I will play it at some point. I think that much like Horizon, the first game was enough for me.

Know what u mean. I waited 6 months to play part2. Good job because it....just....keeps....going and the story pooped on part 1 in the first hour. It's worth playing but it's a shame.

I platinumed horizon on ps4. Gonna play the second one when I get a ps5.

Tried the doc last night but forgot how to play and the first new enemy killed me Lol
