Horrible Accident

You can only open it once the inside is full of water as the pressure is too much.

Big well done to the OP.

No, it is when it has hit the bottom, because as it is sinking the pressure outside is constantly changing regardless of whether the car is full with water of a different pressure. As the car goes down, more water is constantly trying to get in. I highly advise anyone that owns a car to keep a glass window breaker in your glove compartment.

the pressure doesn't change all that much in a few metres of water, it's the air thing - theres a lot of pressure of the water pushing on the car door, keeping it shut.

only when it's full of water inside is the pressure equalized, therefore normal opening

I think it changes enough though to make a difference. I'm surprised no one has invented water-tight cars yet.

Surely it would make more sense just to open the window, since it's not moving against the pressure it would open as normal (of course you would have to open it quickly, since the car would fill up with water rather rapidly afterwards) =P

As far as I know windows won't open either because of the pressure. And electric ones certainly won't. Which most modern cars are fitted with, at least in the front.
