How and why the hell do people defend the actions of travellers?

Also my Dad can't even read & write so I think I'm doing pretty well, My Daughter is also doing Law so we are stepping in the right direction, Hoping for my Grandson for Prime Minister next. :D
 
Haven't had too many run ins with them, so haven't really had any negative (or positive!) experiences, often hear the horror stories from people about them though.

There are a fair few around where i work that seem to have been there for ages. One thing which does annoy me is the fact they leave their horses tied up with a scratty piece of rope next to fairly busy roads on land they don't own. I know horses are hardy animals but they don't look well cared for and are jsut left out regardless of the weather.

I have never understood why they keep the horses either, it'd make sense if living in horse drawn caravans, but they don't and the state of some of them i get the impression they don't really care about them.
 
I personally view them as scum, barely a level above vermin. Their unwashed, uneducated, violant, criminals and do nothing but spoil and corrupt any community they infest.

They should be hunted down like wild dogs and either forced to integrate with normal society or get the hell out of Britain.

Untold chavs on every estate & in every town at the weekends smashing the place up & fighting with each other & the police whilst claiming dole & smoking weed & drinking to much against a few travelers who may help themselves to scrap metal or over charge for hedge cutting tarmac whatever.

I also can't understand how you think that Travelers get away with driving illegally & ignoring the law of the land ? Where's Myth busters when you need them. :p

Thats not what happens when the travelers come to town, if that was a case it would be "aww, those little scallywags have taken away all that junk I was struggling to get rid of, or oohhh, those little tinkers, I could have got my hedges cut for a fiver cheaper if I'd looked around".

What actually happens, is they arrive, throw their **** everywhere, steal everything thats not bolted down, and try their damnedest to steal everything else that isnt and then when the have wrecked or stolen everything in sight, they move on.

Twice they have tried to steal diesel from the lorry I was driving, they tried to steal the tanks off one our tractor units while the driver was sleeping in his cab, and we had numerous break in attempts at our depot while the scum were in town.

Ok, read second bit of first paragraph but since you failed to first time let me reiterate. My point is not to paint them as angels or even to dispute that those that you have encountered were in fact scum. Rather I am saying you and so many like you seem to be judge an entire 'people' on a few bad eggs. Those upset by travellers will always be more vocal, this thread is a classic example, I was never going to start a thread entitled..'Travellers, quite nice people' no more than I was going to start one saying 'chavs, not all bad'. Fact is you will always hear more negative stories than positive. We have had travellers near us but they have never been a problem. You had some bad experiences, I'm sorry to hear that, but again I ask was it all of the travellers in the group? Does this group stand as a 100% example of all other traveller groups? if not then you can no more claim all travellers are scum than I can claim the opposite based on my less negative experiences.

Did I say kill them? Did I say hurt them in any way? No, I believe I did not.

These people are a blight on any community they come into contact with. Why should we lay down like frightened children and let them roll over the top of us? Are we so paralysed by PC culture that we wont lift a single digit to defend our own way of life?

As part of gypsy and traveller history month, the pupils were given the chance to get up close and personal with a convoy of traditional gyspy caravans and travellers and enjoyed a day of activities.

More than 150 youngsters tried their hand at paper flower making, joined in with story-telling sessions, handled memorabilia and listened to some gypsy poetry.

A spokesman for the school said: “The paper flower making went down fantastically well and I think all the children had something they could take home with them.

“It is the first time that we have had the traveller group visit the school and I think it went down very well.”

Each and every summer for 12 years I lived there is not "a few bad eggs".

I'm sure all Nazis were not bad eggs either but we wouldnt want a Nazi party again would we?

I've been talking about both but in different ways. I'm not trying to change peoples minds but they do need to recognise the difference between Romany Gypsys/Travelers & Travelers/****** & anybody else that wants to roam around the country dodging taxes/bills/laws etc The latter being nothing short of criminals the former being people that live legally off the land & live within the laws of the land.

@atpbx - I am sorry to hear you have been plagued by them for 12 years. But my point stands. I had a bad neighbour for 5 years. Would steal stuff from my shed, play music all night, dump his rubbish over the fence. Despite this I don't sit here saying neighbours are scum rather I feel that he as an individual was, just as those individuals in the group of travellers that you complain about seem to be scum.

No killing eh? mmm but not really got enough space to lock them all up...we would need some form of 'Final Solution'......hey Himmler you got any ideas??
 
Isolated community - check.
Low standards of education - check.
Poverty - check.

End result - crime & abhorrent behaviour.

How to deal with the problem is another matter, while protecting the rights of the individual while also trying to dissuade negative social behaviour.

The problem is, you can't have a sub-sect of society pretending they don't belong to society (but take advantage of all the benefits of the society).

I'd also question the logic in allowing what can only be described as child abuse in some cases (lawless communities, dubious relationships with young teens, very strong sexist attitudes, no real education provided to the children).

I can understand why people are angry, but what's needed is a method of actually solving the problem.

One which isn't based of knee-jerk anger, or stupid ideas about locking entire communities up.
 
^ Well put. They get all the benefits and protection from society, without ever having to contribute anything in return. I feel about travellers the same way I feel about junkie scum bags leeching off the benefits system all their days. They should be cut off completely from all support. Let them sink or swim. Let them get jobs. Let them get educated. And if they wont, then let them go away and never come back.
