how common is it for a 360 to die?

Just got mine back from RROD.

Faulty DVD drive (Apparently?! - I never noticed anything..)
Faulty Motherboard

Both replaced and an xbox live month Gold all for the sake of about 10 days? I had my console 2 years before it did this.

If you cba re-read the thread I counted about 7 or 8 people with recent failures. Anyway its a lot lot better!

recent failures, not necessarily recent consoles though, which is my point?
MS don't take back the old models and give new ones. Very few people seem to have new consoles die and they've been out for around 9-10 months now I believe?

Just printing off the Repair returns label at the moment!

This will be the second time i have had to send off for a repair since buying the console in november 2006 first one died around may/june 07 repaired one has died end of june 08! atleast its all free!

Just about to get in touch with MS about my 360. I've had it for about eighteen months but recently I cant play anything without getting a 'disc unreadable' message within ten minutes. Ive never used the console vertcially and the discs of the only two games ive been playing are immaculate.

Sould this drive problem be covered under the standard warranty?

i got a broken 360 for £40, had the single red light with E74 error. Took it apart and removed the heatsink on the GPU, cleaned it then applied some new thermal compound, replaced the xclamp with some screws then took a heatgun to the GPU & ANA chip.

Spent about £10 on materials to fix it and now im enjoying GTA4.

This was a 2006 console, and i expect it wont be the last i hear from the E74

Haha a guy i know buys large quanties of the broken xbox 360 and basically just does that a tube of decent thermal paste give it a general clean, test it over a 24 hour period and sells it again and for a small profit. But seen his profits go down as the xbox360 arnt breaking as much but still making a few pennies from it.

i brought mine six month after it lanched and i have had 2 of them go worng. First time was the 3 red light and second time was the dvd drive

Well, i'm anticipating the arrival of my first xbox 360 this week. It's an elite, though i've no idea whether or not it's based the on the newer design.

I've noticed a lot of reports of red rings and dying 360's and i was just wondering really as to how common this actually is. I mean percentage wise, are we talking 5%? or 10%? Or more? Does anyone have any idea? Are there any measures i might be able to take to reduce the risk of my machine giving out on me?

I was considering having it standing vertically next to my pc tower.

I think for people with the original Xbox360 there's quite a high failure rate, mine failed a couple of months ago.

Repair/replacement is very good and quick, so nothing to worry about really.

Just make sure the Xbox has good ventilation to the unit and the power supply.

I replaced my working near launch console with an Elite when the Elite launched in the UK nearly a year ago. It'll be the old design yet it's never skipped a beat.

My only advice for reducing the risk is to play it often. I've noticed many of the failure come from people who freely admit to not playing the console for weeks if not months at a time.

Yes, then it's class action lawsuit time.

but they could save millions of dollar by making a better heatsink surely. would people also really know if they did make a change?

i remember watching a program about the 360 before it was released in the US and there main priority was getting it out before Christmas but the interviewer asked so how many consoles have been made, and this was late summer and the M$ guy replied "none".

thats nothink! lol.

Which goes to show most 360 fail because of the user not looking after it.
