How far does everyone commute to work?

I had a harder time gaining weight when I used to cycle regularly than now. Gaining weight is hard enough for me already, I don't fancy burning loads of calories by spending 90 minutes a day cycling.

And I'm talking about here, London, fair enough, the traffic was a nightmare when I visited it, I don't know why people put up with it and don't demand some sort of new underground road network ( willing to pay tax for specifically that) such as in Boston. It's a shame London is crippled by such slow transport that cycling is faster :(.

Just too many people like to drive around in gas guzzlers, there are plenty of easier and quicker ways of getting around, such as the underground.

Snowdog, are you underweight or something? I cycle between 200 and 400 miles a week and I struggle to loose weight, I'm stuck at around 11.5stone but that's a fine weight for me.

Some people put on weight easier than others. I eat far more than most people but don't put on any weight, even when I spent a while weight training. In fact normally when I spend a long time not doing much excerices I will usually lose a little weight, I can only assume because my muscle mass decreases slightly...

Hence use a bike :p.

If not too far to work then fair enough, but as FF has already pointed out it's hard to take gym kit, laptop/work stuff, gym kit etc in on a bike. Plus if you wern't gyming etc then turnin up hot and sweaty in your crinckled suit really isn't the best way to go about keepng up appearances at work.

I take it you haven't done the London thing ;)

The underground here is terrible in Rotterdam they only ride 45 kph on the above ground bits ( half the way ), which means when taking bus combined with the metro, takes me 45 minutes to get to uni. Even if I go directly to the metro station, it takes me 25 minutes from station to station to get to uni. With a moped it takes 20 minutes to get from my house to uni, with my car it takes 10 if traffic is light, half the way there is on a motorway, the other half is on a dual lane avenue... I only take PT occasionally because it's free for me as a student, otherwise I have zero respect and will refuse to pay a penny to ride on public transport, it's so horribly slow and inefficient compared to private means of transport, even cycling :(.

Two loads of gym kit :p ?! And as I pointed out, it's not.

I take it you haven't heard of panniers ;).

When employed in Bristol, 7 mins on motorbike, 50 mins on bus, 45 mins walk, hour car. Ok, always mobike, then passed test and got company car, and expected to take it to work everyday. Yueuch, Hated it, and changed jobs.

Well I have now.

Selling up and getting a bike, you are very bikey in this thread? :D

Could never really do the bike thing in London, the social scene really does not lend itself to having to pilot your own transport home :D:D

I choose comfort and a/c and music with spending a few minutes in traffic vs being one of those 2 wheeled pests (and not motorbikes as they rock ;)).

It's just much easier and quicker for me to drive (to my old office) than it would be to cycle or take public transport.

20 minute drive using the Motorway or 54 minute cycle using the quiet roads.

About 12 miles by car, 18 miles by bike.

Every year I consider cycling to work and every year I reject it. I prefer going cycling when I actually want to cycle somewhere, I enjoy it that way.
When I'm going to work I just want to get there, and definitely don't want to get there and then think about cooling down, washing, changing and so on. Plus my route has some monster hills both there and back which I honestly can't be bothered to cycle up after a busy day at work!

About 26 miles, but I do it by 2 trains and a bus (bus is just for last leg from station to business park) takes around 1h 15m which isn't too bad as I can browse the web on my iPhone, watch some video, do some work or reading etc.

It was a shock at first as my last commute was 30s (from bedroom to home office!).

Used to be about 5 miles which would take about 20-30 minutes driving or 45 minutes walking and then bus.

Now I have a company car and driving to work, 25 miles each way. Takes about 30 minutes each way as I live just off the motorway and my work is just off the motorway at the other end. Probably hoping to move somewhere closer in a year or so.
