How fast can i go for 1500 quid?

as above guys, due to the impending arrival of another Octy bus taxi (changed my mind and decided to get is now rather than end of the year) i'm sick of the sight of dervy Vag derived sensible cars. Although i've also got a wee project bmw thats going to be at least 6-12 months till completed. What i need is a fast fun car for 1500 quid.


Top of the list so far is a XR2(mk2) turbo conversion or a 2l 16v nova/corsa


anyone care to offer me some ideas, handling would be nice and conversions welcome as long as I could realistically get one for 1500 pounds.

Insurance isn't an issue(fleet policy)
fuel economy isn't an issue(its a weekend track/strip/Backroad toy)
reliability is also not top of the list although i dont want a shed that breaks all the time or something needing work.

Sierra XR4x4 ? stripped out and the suspension sorted it would be a lot of fun on a twisty track/road.

Your budget would get a decent one and leave lots of cash for mods

Do you want fast, or fun?

I ask because you can still have fun with a car that is not necessarily "fast" (in the scheme of things). My GT6C isn't really what I'd call fast (it can keep up with the day to day driving, motorways, etc. but I would guess its around 8 seconds or so to 60, maybe more) however, you can get it sideways pretty much whenever you like (and in the wet, it's difficult NOT to go sideways:D) and it sounds delicious.

I still enjoy driving it, even though it's not what anybody would specifically class as fast:)
 
You could get a plane ticket for £100 or so that would let you go at 500+mph ;)

Something like an older V12 Jag is probably near the top of the power/pound ratio.
 
As Volospian said do you want an actual fast car or do you want a car that is more fun. A lot like the GT6 the Dolomite really isn't hard to get the rear end out, though it is a little faster than the GT6 aswell. Plus both cars feel fast when doing speeds that normally wouldn't.

Put it this way, when Peternem took me out in his 530i along some of my usual country roads it felt really quite slow at 60-70 along it. Doing the same speed in my Dolomite scared a mate thats never been scared with me driving before, even when I had done higher speeds in my Focus along the same road. I find it is so much more fun and a big plus you arn't doing stupid speeds to have any fun. The GT6 will be even more raw, thats why people like the Spitfire too. Might be slower than the GT6 but it still has the same feeling for speed.
 
Honda Civic Vti (EG6 Chassis)

I have had 2 and I kept up with a Fiesta with a 2.0 conversion, and a BMZ Z4 at high speed.

Standard specs

0-60 - 7.2 seconds

1/4 mile 15.5 @ 90mph or better depending how good you drive.

For a 1.6 you wont find faster, 160bhp as standard, RS turbo's stand no chance at all.

VTi = bye bye Gti ;)

btw if your after reliablitly forget ford and vauxhall.

The B16A2 engine in the civic will go on forever! Sadly they suffer from rust on the rear arches so look out for that.

One day ill own a V12 Jag :p

Its in my list of old cheap cool cars that i need to get hold of :p
 
Rover 220 Turbo or a 620ti.

A lot of the other stuff mentioned sounds quite heavy and may be quite expensive to maintain and run.
 
if you're happy buying a bike, then for £1500 i'd wager you'd get to 60 in ~3s, and achieve a comfortable 150mph (probs more)
