How hard is it to obtain a pump-action shotgun (legally?)

Sort of a thread hijack...

Can any of the gun buffs tell me if there is a modification I can get for my Remington 870 Express (28") that can reduce the magazine capacity to 2? It currently holds 5 and I want to bring it to the UK and I don't want the hassle of a FAC. I've asked at a few gun shops in the US but they aren't sure of the UK's legal requirements.

Are they really that powerful? Also surely they're of limited use with one shot?

Yes - they really are that powerful. A standard air-rifle produces 12 ft lbs of energy. Modern crossbows can easily produce well over 120 ft lbs of energy - much much more powerful, and totally unlicensed

My crossbow is in the region of 130 ft lbs, and it would easily kill bigger things than your average shotgun would.
Seems crazy really with air rifles being limited to 12 ft lbs, the difference in power is unbelieveable.

How hard is it to draw back a crossbow?

Easy, as mine has a metal bracket at the end that you put your foot through and then draw the string with both hands.

My gf could do it and she is pretty petite and weighs around 8 stone.

So you don't need to be built like a brick ****house to draw one.

To be fair a bolt from a crossbow could pass straight through without causing too much damage. A shotgun literally peppers the target with problems.

I'm not saying being hit by a bolt at 130lbs of force isnt going to sting or leave a mark, and it IS ludicrous that they're not subject to the same laws, but i'd still suggest a shotgun would do more damage.

If i had a raptor come at me like a bro, i'd rather have a shotgun in hand than a crossbow.

Definitely taking a shotgun over that.

BRB having zombie charge me whilst I try and draw a crossbow back.

Not to mention if it's that powerful, surely it'd just go through someone? Not saying it wouldn't be terminal, but surely it wouldn't put them down immediately unless you hit in the head/heart?

In any case, forget the shotgun and the licence. Make a wanted thread in MM for a Mac10 and you'll have one in less than 3 minutes.

I know someone who legally owns shotguns, one of which is semi-automatic (not pump action, better in fact!).

Once upon a time it held five, but following a change in the law it had to be sent of and limited to three cartridges.

The guns are stored in a wall mounted cabinet, there are three locks. Each key has to be stored in a different location in the house.

Many years ago I tried clay pigeon shooting and even a spot of hunting. I was totally rubbish at both and ended up with a sore shoulder for my troubles lol.

Without doubt at 10 - 20 feet away i would have thought it would pass straight through someone if it hit them in the torso.

I guess at close range it would be useless compared to a shotgun in a 'zombie apocalypse' scenario, but as an all rounder its effectiveness at range would make it more preferable in my eyes. Plus its silent.

Its soooo easy to get tooled up over here. I bought 500 rds of 22 for $16 and they weight probably just over a kilo. The amount of guns they have in dickssporting goods is crazy for a shop like jjb sports or whatever its called.

I would take the crossbow. The most 'realistic' zombie scenario is the 28 days later ones. Meaning, they can be 'killed' like any other normal person. A crossbow bolt that can go through multiples of them would be pretty handy. Otherwise, blunt weapons are the way to go.

zombies are gonna be real some day, but knifes/sharp edged weapons will be better. Guns attract huge sound.

Best bet for ranged weapons is a crossbow. Take a 9mm silenced pistol around with you for the oh **** moments, deals hardly any sound with the muzzle. Will still have flash though (unless you can stack a flash muzzle with a silencer?)

About £4 a box here if you use semi decent stuff so about $60 for 500 :(

17hmr and centrefire stuff is ££££

Suppressed guns are still loud, very loud actually.

Only when the shooter uses the same ammunition as he would without a suppressor.

You can buy deactivated AK47s if you look in the right places, wouldnt take much to get these reactivated if you really needed to....

Rubbish, don't believe all the news reports you hear about the reactivation of deactivated firearms.

If you think I'm wrong, tell me how.
