You take a piece of string. You cut it in half. You eat one piece.

Did you eat half a piece of string?

NO!! You did not eat half a bloody piece of string you ate a whole one.

I'm taking a second stab at this.

So your sting is not complete in the first place it is just a piece of string. Not a whole string. Or a ball of string. Just a piece of string. I has met no criteria set to state it is a whole, and by the description given it is clearly not a whole string.

You cut it in half to make 2 smaller pieces of string. You eat one of these pieces of string (some sort of northern delicacy). You have another piece of string, you don't want to insult your northern host so you eat the other half of your string serving.

Did you eat a whole string? No you ate 2 pieces of string that constituted one serving of string. Eating any more string would be plain greedy.

Good. Your first attempt was decidedly poor ;)

I'm going to need a definition of a whole string here.

Yes Gilly I eat the second piece of string but I did not eat a whole string. Because there is an unquantified amount of string where the original piece was taken from.

piece
n.
1. A thing considered as a unit or an element of a larger thing, quantity, or class; a portion: a piece of string.
2. A portion or part that has been separated from a whole: a piece of cake.

I'm gonna have to bust my 1337 maths skills out here!
[1337]

1 ÷ 2 = 0.5

[/1337]

So 1 sandwich sliced in half gets you half a sandwich. If you start with one sandwich, the only way you can multiply it is to make another.

We must find how long a piece of string is :|

Kronologic, the quote you posted was incomplete, I've corrected it below:

2. A portion or part that has been separated from a whole: a piece of cake or a ONE SANDWICH TO LEAVE TWO HALVES OF THAT ONE SANDWICH!!!!!!!1111

:p

I bow down to your 1337 maths skills for they are entirely correct :)

For any of your argument to hold water you need to quantify a whole string. You've not done this yet.

A whole string is a string found in its original undevided state after production.

like whole sandwich when found in its original undevided state after production

When you cut a sandwhich you get pieces of a sandwhich.
When you cut the original string you get pieces of string.

Well done. You got your point across well :p

If you take a sandwhich and cut it into 2000 pieces, do you have 2000 sandwichs?

And they're both whole, full things. The piece of string is a whole piece of string. The sandwich is a whole sandwich.

So you've still not achieved anything

Looks like the poll is doing the talking at the moment :D If this were a democracy, the One Sandwich party would be in government :p
