Correct you can you can slice a slice but you are still left with 2 half’s of a slice
I thought a slice is the result of slicing something?

I think people are having a problem because of the change in shape from a square to a triangle/rectangle.

MSPaint Diagram time!

Rolf the Baker bakes a special loaf in order to solve this dilemma.

Solved.

Rolf has an abnormal loaf

Consider a 90 minute football match, by cutting it in to two 45 minute halves do you claim that there have in fact been two football matches played? I think not :p

It's useless comparing it with other things, it's already been shown umpteen times that there are examples where you describe things as half-X and others where the prefix is not required.

To get the right answer you have to delve into the accepted definition of the words. It appears the crux of the matter is the recursive nature of 'slice' - you can slice a slice of bread into more slices. Therefore it must follow that a sandwich split into 2 entities makes 2 sandwiches.

People, please note this when trying to come up with more examples :o
Some of the ones posted are quite simply stupid :)

Cutting a slice of bread in half gives two halves of a slice of bread unless you cut it in a way not described in the original post, which is to create two thinner slices of bread.

A man is making his lunch before he goes to work. He gets out two slices of bread, butters them both and sticks a filling in between. He then cuts the thing in half.
As already said though, the answers in the question. The man has cut the sandwich in half leaving two halves of one sandwich.

If it was "The man slices the sandwich in two" then you could maybe suggest that he has produced two sandwiches.

TBH this thread needs to be closed, its going no where. :)

Really?

I can't see any reference in the definition of a slice to either the angle of attack or the thickness of the slice?

What would it be if I stood the loaf of bread on it's end and sliced vertically with the same approach as you would the sandwich? Is that no longer a slice?

If you then reduce the length of the loaf by an inch - still slices produced? Reduce the loaf to 1cm thick - still slices produced?

Now your just arguing the size of a slice again. Its just best to agree to dissagree.
one-half: one of two equal parts of a divisible whole; "half a loaf"; "half an hour"; "a century and one half"
1 whole sandwich halfed equals two halfs IMO but everybody has a right to their own and sometimes different opinion.

We need another poll

When you go to a deli, do you say

A) Can i have a sandwich please?

or

B) Can I have variable number of sandwiches depending on how good your cutting skill is which will give me the answer to how many sandwiches i require.

or

C) Just give me the damn sandwich, don't even bother cutting it.

A. Sometime's the sandwich will be whole, sometimes cut in half.

1 Sandwich 180 54.88%
2 Sandwiches 103 31.40%
We should be banned for letting this go on so long 45 13.72%

Oh my oh my, well I think we know what the answer is surely?

But no doubt the result will be disputed, as most people don't know what they're talking about 'obviously', and this will be debated 'til the end of time.

However, knowing the general consensus as far as the public is concerned is good enough for me ;)
