Cut a lump of cheese in 2. 2 lumps of cheese.
Cut a piece of paper in 2. 2 pieces of paper.
Cut a piece of wood in 2. 2 pieces of wood.

Some things can be cut in half and still be classed as what they originally were, despite being smaller. It's simple. Cutting a sandwich in half does not make either piece any less a sandwch.

So what if you cut a piece of bread in half and then make each half into a sandwich, would you agree that you then had two sandwiches?
Mate we're way, way, way beyond that argument.

It's still only one sandwich though *ducks and hides*

EDIT:

Yes that's two pieces of sandwich, not two sandwiches

erm if the chunk you bit off has two slices of bread and filling then by your own definition it's a sandwich, so yes you have two sandwiches ;)

I'm not playing anymore though :D

Cut some string in half. 2 pieces of string.
Split a drink over 2 glasses. 2 drinks.
Split a sandwich in two. 2 sandwiches.
Split a raft into 2. 2 rafts.
Split an island into 2. 2 islands.
Cut some wire into 2. 2 wires.
Cut some pipes into 2. 2 pipes.
Both of these statements are true but look at the question again...
A man is making his lunch before he goes to work. He gets out two slices of bread, butters them both and sticks a filling in between. He then cuts the thing in half. How many sandwiches are there?
The man has halfed the sandwich meaning there are two halfs. If the question was 'The man sliced the sandwich in two, how many sandwiches are there?' then the second piece of logic would come into play.

Regaurding this question, there are two halfs of one sandwich.

Can we please stop now because I couldn't get to sleep last night for thinking about sandwiches!!!

Nobody has mentioned this yet:

Cut a worm in half = two worms.

I'm waiting for my wife, who has been keeping up with this thread, to play a practical joke on me. Heading up north for a week, she'll ask me "How many sandwiches do you want?" I'll answer "Twenty-five should hold me." When I get there, I'll open my cooler to find one sandwich sliced into 25 squares. :o
