How often do you upgrade your CPU and Motherboard

my brother as a 3070 aorus master and noticed a good uplift in average FPS and a big uplift in 1% lows.

he like me upgraded from a 5600 to a 5800x3d (i have the 5700x3d) there is literally 2% differance in the 2 cpu's
Coming from the 1600af (2600) it is a big improvement. Techspot have it at 4%
No but think about it another way, the 5700X3D probably wouldn't really bottleneck a 4080S so you'd get more mileage out of the older sys.
I upgrade so infrequently, the next GPU I get will probably be faster than a 4080S. I am using some odd resolution between 1440 and 1080.

Well it seems you're a mid-range queen anyhow so the 5700X3D prob still handle it fine ;)

there is a lot of testing out there showing the 5800x3d is still up there with the big hitting CPU's, im not saying it king but its doing a lot better than it should be for the cost.

if you looking at 7900xt or 4080 plus i would think your at least running 1440p. at that sort of res its still very much holding it own

still using xeon 5670, works well but ghost of tsuma didn't load, does it need W11?

It's weird how games are still pretty good considering it's age, years ago I started off with IBM XT, IBM AT, 286, 386, 486, Pentium II etc all needed new machines as tech moved on so fast.

on my PC Doom plays at 100fps, high settings, 2560x1440

Going by the system requirements it does not need Windows 11, are you using W10?

System Requirements
  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system.
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit.
  • Processor: Intel Core i3-7100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200.
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT.
  • Storage: 75 GB available space.
  • Additional Notes: SSD Recommended.

I can be a bit of a nightmare with upgrading, but I am the same with Mobiles Phones, golf clubs :)
I get bored and need some retail therapy, or I just need therapy !!!

I currently have a 7950X3D which is great for everything and I really don't see the need to change this year unless the 9950X3D is a big leap forward. Prior to that I had the 7950X but kept the same motherboard.
But I will see what Intel have this time around as I fancy a change!

To be honest as I game at 4k the biggest upgrade I can do is the GPU so may just hold out for the 5090 or whatever it will be and stick with the AMD for another year, but I do get that itch when I see others talking about new CPU's, I feel like I am missing out.

Also I did not realise that Wifi 7 does not work correctly on AMD motherboards. Intel have not released a working driver from what I can see which is a bit naughty, not a major issue but will hopefully be rectified soon as I do use a Ubiquiti U7 Pro AP.

I used to spend thousands every year, latest new motherboard, new cpu, new memory, new top end graphics card as soon as they released and whatever else. I hadn't done that since around 2012, it was easy living with parents and lots of disposable income, plus top of the range stuff has gone through the roof over the last few years, I'll probally buy peasant hardware unless my circumstances change, which it probally will in the coming months.

Anything with £2+ LED Debug on the motherboard costs and arm and a leg now lol. Motherboard prices are an absolute joke and ripoff.

This MSI Z77 MPower was £150 from Overclockers, look at all that stuff on the motherboard, even proper heatpipes lol. Motherboard companies are all in on it together in a cartel, ripping everyone off, its become a luxury item.

I definitely used to upgrade far more often when prices were actually decent. Motherboard prices are now ridiculous compared to what they were even just 10yrs ago for the high end ones. Had a look at the price on the ASRock Z87 OC Formula/AC I tried for a very short while (sent back after a few days due to a buggy BIOS), when new that board looking at the overclockers store here with the wayback machine it was only £259! (about £353 with inflation). It even had a conformal coating over the whole board which can't have been cheap to do, had a very nice OLED screen which would still look great on a current top end board and water cooling. Imagine if this launched now it would be £800+ easily with modern features.

We're almost in 2025, why aren't OLED/LCD diagnostic screens not a very basic feature on every motherboard these days as they are so much easier to read than a red diagnostic LED with a random number you need to look up, they aren't' that expensive.

Been using the 610e, generally it's ok, not as snappy as the xeon/ryzen in windows, probably doesn't help apps are CPU intensive ie firefox taking upto 50% CPU usage, and windows hovering 25%-85%

I upgraded from a 3700x to a 5700x3d last week and very pleased having had the older chip for about 4 years, min fps seems to of improved quite a bit (3070 GPU). I've been out the loop and didn't realise that RAM prices were quite as low, so a nice upgrade from 16>32GB (2x8 > 2x16, couldn't find more of the existing RAM I had) has improved my situation quite a bit. I was toying with a whole new PC which was coming out at over £2500 (admittedly half of that being GPU) so having spent about £200 I am very pleased with my upgrade.

This was the first time I have ever upgraded an existing system as previous intel machines required a new motherboard so I am well chuffed with that :).
