How times have changed . . . .

Thread inspired me to go rooting through the attic to find my old toys. Brought down three boxes of K'nex (:D) but have no idea where my Lego is (:(). Found a dead bird though :p.

This isn't times changing its a spoilt little kid :)

Exactly. They existed 'back in my day' as well. The parents need a slap. Actually they're going to reap what they sow. I wouldn't wish a spoilt teenager on anybody but these chimps sound like they deserve it.

OP get the kid a chess set. Somebody has got to see to the kids education.

As a father to a 6 and 7 year old most of their presents both from us and family have been along the lines of:

Train sets
Scalextric
Lego (lots of)
Cars
Dinosaurs
Forts
Brick building kits

Very reluctant to buy them electronic goods. We have a Wii and a xbox but they are in the family areas and they are controlled as to when they can play.

I think when I was 7 I got a lot of fun out of playing with the giant box something my parents bought came in. Get him a box :)

My nephew (5) got a PS3 and TV for his Christmas and then a PSP for his birthday 2 weeks later!

I was shocked, I don't even think I bought him anything.

My daughters 8th birthday is in a few weeks, and we have brought her a laptop, got a cracking deal and it only cost me £200. Reason buying her that was we had planned on getting a TV, but that would require a DVD player as well as running a connection or sky box to her room. The laptop means she can watch Sky GO when she wants and all the movies etc, so seemed a better buy long term.

As a dad to 2 teenagers, i'm a bit guilty to spoiling my kids especially when they were young, a lot has to due with the fact that i very rarley got what i wanted as a kid, but it didn't stop my father spending loads of money in the Pub every night, He wasn't skint either, he was an RSM WO1 in the army. :)

Spoilt child is spoilt.....

If I had children I might buy them a PS3 or a Wii or a DS or a tv or laptop for a birthday... not ALL of them...

Furthermore presents from non-parents can have a value up to about £30...

Typical ideas are CD's, computer games, or for the younger generation lego...

Jeez my kids won't be getting anything like that till they are around 10. For now they make do with those kiddies video cameras. Love 'em they do. They spend more time on the trampoline though.

Can't help thinking that 7 year old will be a bit of lard arse by the time he's 8. None of those gifts seem to encourage activity.

My little girl loves her ipod she has been using it since she was 2 1/2, she is now 4.

Just get him a DS game.

Luckily he is naturally a very active kid .. and he will be getting a bike for his birthday which i intend to make sure he is on as much as possible.

But overall, yup I agree with this point, not necessarily aiming it directly at my nephew but I have seen one or two of his friends who are already heading to obesity and these kind of presents are no doubt one reason for this

Get him a toy iphone 4, made of plastic or something. Sounds like a spoilt little brat to me. When I was younger I got great gifts, but had to wait longer for some of them. E.g A Sony stereo when I was 13, I had to wait xmas and birthday until I could have it

When I was 7 I got things like Mouse Trap or Kerplunk off family members

I did get an Amiga for my 7th birthday present though. I still had it when I was 15

Thread makes me want to 'play' Mouse Trap

This vid is quite funny (and exactly right)

"The chance of that happening is like waiting for a solar eclipse"

"Who wants to play the game, just crank that ****!"
