How to be a successful Boy Racer

Lopez your replies have been so good I cant believe its not butter:)

On the topic of loud music, its like in my room, I put it loud with nice balance of base because thats how Busta Rhymes likes to be heard, I couldnt give a rats ass in impressing the neighbours:p

Why do some many feel they have to pose with their car, playing loud music...

How many take notice. If I see this in the street, I don't think, wow, cool tunes or wow, look how fast he can go..

It doesn't bother me.. I play tunes in my car.. I play what I feel like.. if it's loud its loud, if not then so what..!!

I do drive 10 or so miles above certain speed limits, and have been know to have a mad minute or two, were I drive like a nutter... It's just a rush, as we know it's wrong, however I don't feel I have to drive like this to impress... Who's going to see it.. Other then the speed camera..

Boy Racers in souped up cars, let them be, but I tend to not notice, as I expect others not to notice when I drive a little fast, or play loud music..

When I'm in my car, I play my music as loud as I can. Why? Because I absolutely love listening to my music. It gives me a chance to let off steam because I can't play it at home with a house full of people. The first modificaiton I'll make when I get my next car will be to put a half decent stereo in there. Do I do it to show off? Absolutely not, what the hell is there to show off about anyway? It's my music, and it's my car, my space so I'll play it however loud I damn well want.

I don't drink and drive, I don't smoke (that REALLY annoys me, people who bang on about mobile phone users and then drive along with a fag in one hand), and I don't talk on my phone and drive. I hardly think loud music is a crime.

That's because we all strive for quiter fans ;)

The fact of the matter is that boy racer or not EVERYBODY likes to show off, wether it be new shoes, car, camera or PC.

How many people who have posted in this thread have also posted "Do I get bragging rights for this" or simply bought something new and shown it off to there best friend etc.

It is in human nature to do this but obviously some go to greater lengths than others. Is this that they are more insecure or is it just the done thing ?

In the last week we have seen on these forums lots of people complaining about the same things.......ie dont tar us all with the same brush........we had townies, boy racers, ricers etc

It also seems to be the norm that if you look to fall into a certain category then you get put in there wether or not you think you conform to the stereotypial image of the group you have been placed.

There are two types of "boy racer" in my oppinion.

The first arent actually boy racers, but are put into that stereotype by many of the people in here. They are actually car enthusiasts, in a car club and spend most of the weekend polishing their cars. They modify their cars to make them different from every other car on the planet (you may say all they have is the body kit or whatever which makes them the same, but I would bet money that there are no two identical cars in any of the hundreds of car clubs). They will probably have a loud exhaust and induction kit - this increases the power of the car for a lot less than a new engine. Maybe only 6-8bhp, but its cheaper. They will probably have an uprated sound system, but you will find that most of these will have proper sound deadening and will only put the volume up to the point where it sounds good - clear and with no distortion. Obviously you get the ones with the SPL systems, but they are designed to go that loud, it is their hobby.

Then you get the ones who just like to rag their cars and show off their idiotic driving. These are the real boy racers. They whack the volume of their head unit and 6x9's to the point where they are so distored, you cant hear anything but noise.

BTW if you people dont like to show off, please explain why there is a thread every week asking for "bragging rights". Ta

edit, just looked through lopez's post and we share the same views :)

I think it's mainly the attitude of the few that spoil it for the many. I had a conversation about this with one of the managers at work (Owns a riced up Saxo VTR) He couldn't work out why I bought a Civic VTI when I don't drive through town at 80-100mph like he does. (I stick to the speed limits in built up areas, sadly means I never really get VTEC in town :'(). His attitude worries me, he's already got about 6 points on his licence, and is either going to lose his licence or kill someone fairly soon.

I freely open up the VTI on dual carriageways and going over the moors where I'm not likely to injure anyone else, but I wouldn't dream of screaming round town like a nutter like some of them do.

No doubt some people will lump me in with the boy racers when they see me about in my car, but it's standard. The real problem is the few total idiots who get everyone else a bad name.

So it's ok to do this against people who drive modified cars, but not black people, or women, or old people...

That sentance condones racism, sexism, ageism, and all the other isms i cant remember...

110% behind lopez here. I dont hate boy racers, I respect most. I dont like bad drivers though, and most of those are in the 30-50 age range. What you have to remember is that is that these people have spent their hard earned money on their cars, and dont particularly want to wreck them. Last week I witnessed one 'boy racer' swerve to avoid some kid on a BMX and crash into some railings. The lad was in tears because he'd damaged his bumper, most are the same and dont drive wrecklessly for fear of damaging their car and having to pay even more ridiculous insurance.

I play my music as loud as I want it.

I stick to the speed limits, perhaps bending them a little on the dual carraigeways (80mph).

As long as I am a safe driver, I don't care what you think.

You don't have to be a boy racer to be a crap/unsafe driver.

Yup Daz, sounds like how my mates (and me when I get a car..) drive. In fact, you'll be amazed how peed off people get if you sit at 28 in a 30 zone.

I belong to car clubs and modify my car? Am i a boy racer?

Does my custom made performance exhaust, induction kit, exterior mods, and stereo make me me a boy racer?

The inside of my car is boxed up, so the sound is contained in the car. I can drive with loud music going, and people outside can hardly hear it. I have it loud, as this is when the music is most pure, i have component speakers, 6/9's and a 12inch sub. It plays music how its supposed to be heard. I listen to music when im in my room at uni, i have a portable MP3 player to listen when im walking about, but im a boy racer when i have it in my car?

I spent far too much money on my car to drive it about recklessly, the last thing i want to do is crash it. Does this make me a boy racer?

Loving my car, and spending money on it to make it what i want is not a crime.

I dont mind loud music, I play mine loud, but when it is late and I am going through a town or into a housing estate I turn it down. I dont see a problem with the music loud at all unless it is 7 or 8:00 at night and in a housing estate or small town.

Very well said mate.

Just because you've seen an incident with one bad driver does not mean that everyone who drives a similar car drives as bad, and therefore should be subjected to be tagged a "boy racer"

The discos they have in their cars - with the windows wound down to attract passers by - is certainly illegal and causes noise pollution.

Oh and if they are illegal surely you have grounds to complain to the police. I play my music as loud as I want, I have spent well over £1000 on my system, I should be able to listen to what I want however I want thanks :)

yep people playing loud music in a car must be attention seekers. So that must mean people playing a concert are seeking attention while thousands of fans listen to them :p

some good points there lopez, agree with you 100% mate

I heard once (unconfirmed) that if the police can hear the stereo outside the vehicle, they are allowed to confiscate the equipment. Same for houses etc.

I like loud music too, but not so loud that my ears bleed :)

going back to what some 1 said earlier,

to be honest i sometimes drive fast. not allways. im not a boy racer though

however, i DO have me music loud at times, co i like my music loud, nothing else i turn it up, when im in a really good mood :D

You all seem to be forgetting that playing loud music in a car is illegal as it distracts other road users.

Not if you use dynamat, which all decent ICE installs should. ;)
