*** How to obtain a bike license ***

So, my DAS course starts tomorrow morning at 9am :D mod 1 & 2 scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Got my full paper + photocard licence, theory test cert, & CBT cert. Clear visor and all my usual riding kit. Will wear my earplugs on the way there and ask about wearing them on the mod 2 training. Some food and drink and I think that's it. Anything else I've forgotten? And any tips to help with nerves on test day? I ****ing hate tests with a passion even though I know I can pass with no problems! :o

Tips? Pass your mod1 or you're screwed lol! My main tip would be just to remember to keep the revs up in the slow maneuvers in the mod1 test. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be fine having had your 125 experience.

Haha yeah, it's pressure/nerves that will be my downfall more than anything else. I've had over an hour on big bikes doing slow speed stuff too so shouldn't be an issue.

Also need to get into the habit of doing shoulder checks when pulling away from a standstill, plus a few other bad habits I'm sure to have picked up.

I do have a contingency plan for the MOD 1, I have next wed/thurs/fri off work so could re-do MOD 1 then IF I fail.

Good luck :) You'll be fine!

Not kept up to date with all the tests etc, if they're still the same as it were 2-3 years ago then..

MOD 1 - Pretty easy tbh! People say slow-speed manoeuvres are the most difficult.. The only minor I had, which is a common one apparently, is not getting up to the 32mph speed for the emergency stop the first time (you get 2 chances to do this).

MOD 2 - is just riding normally (or legally.. :p ), DAS will get rid of any bad habits you might have.

So, day one of my DAS done :D

Did mostly on road stuff, with an hour or so of mod 1 slalom/figure of 8 and u turn.

My road riding is completely fine, I'm within the top 5% of pupils he's taught for the on road stuff, I thank 5000 miles on a 125 for that. No mistakes, no bad habits.

For the mod 1 stuff the er6n I'm on has a very heavy clutch which bites about an inch from the bars, vs my bike with its feather weight clutch which bites just as you pull it in, so it took a bit of time to nail the clutch bite point, wasn't able keep a nice constant rpm and slip the clutch at first, so was putting a foot down every so often. Got it down towards the end though, so that's just time on the bike - I'd only ridden it for 40 minutes prior to that.

Being so used to changing onto 2nd, 3rd, 4th so early I wasn't even hitting 4k revs either, got used to letting it breathe a bit more as we went on though :D

Tomorrow will be more mod1 stuff, got an extra pupil too, was just me and the instructor today.

I have to admit my left hand and was a bit sore from the er6 clutch. It is adjustable mate so you can move the bite point out a bit...I had to move it in a bit as it was right at the end of my reach

edit: beaten to it

Do you mean adjust the lever position or the cable adjustment? The reach was fine, just that it had a lot of travel before biting. I prefer it to bite nice and early as you grab the lever. I'll ask tomorrow before we get on the bikes.

I seem to remember the adjuster knob on the lever being a fair way out already so there may not be much adjustment left. Might be able move the lever out a little though which will move the bite point further out. Although I might be on a different ER6n tomorrow.

Yeah that's pretty typical for school bikes, unless you get lucky and they're new and haven't been dropped 10 times/had their clutches worn down to metal by complete newbies :D

Oh and not wearing earplugs was perfectly fine, on the big bike, because I wasn't having to rev the engine to 12k rpm in every gear it was actually quite pleasant :D and the wind noise at 30-40mph was ok.

Oh yeah, I don't have any problems getting up to the speed limit :D

Today was much better on the slalom, had a different bike and the clutch was lighter. If I can get the slalom and figure of 8 done I'll sail through the rest. We'll be doing the emergency stop/swerve tomorrow morning before the test so that I'm doing it in the same conditions, they have a decent method for hitting 50kph too.

Yeah the system they use for the er6n is: 15mph round the bend in 3rd gear, at the last blue cone nail the throttle fully open, at the green cones just before the speed trap roll off the throttle, this guarantees just over 50kph depending on your bodyweight, lighter guys and girls will be going around 57kph, heavier guys 52/53kph.

About 20mph round the bend, gun it as you're coming out, look down to see the speedo and hold steady then either swerve or stop. I was always quicker than I had to be but the way I saw it was that you can get minors/majors for going to slow but nothing for going over so long as you can still do the swerve/stop.

My instructor ensured me I would not have time to check the speedo but he was wrong.

3rd? That's interesting as everything I've read and instructors have all said to use 2nd gear and I was on an ER6 as well

**** yeah :D:cool:

All passed, 0 faults on the mod1, 2 minors on the mod2.

Nailed the speed on the 3 runs using the method above, 55, 53 and 55. First time I nailed the throttle in 3rd at 15mph it nearly pulled my arms off, I WAS NOT expecting that sort of acceleration!!!

Time to rip the L plates off the varadero :D
