How to protect your home and your self from hostiles. Offiicial thread!!!

I dont know if you live in the UK or the US but in this country (UK) if you shoot or stab a burgler/intruder and he dies then with our court system there is a good chance and there are many coses where you may get done for manslaughter.

No, there aren't. It's something that happens very rarely and you wouldn't be done for manslaughter unless you used a weapon that you had planned to use beforehand (and not necessarily even then).

You could count the number of people done for manslaughter in the UK in a defence scenario on your fingers and they went so far over the top into unreasonable force that it was like a horror film plot. A real example off the top of my head - a captured intruder was beaten, thrown into a pit and set on fire. "in defence".

I think defence laws in the UK are going too far. We now have a legal precedent that it's OK to gather some friends, hunt someone down and make a very determined effort to beat them to death in revenge. I'd say that was medieval, but they were trying to be more civilised at least as far back as the time of Alfred the Great.

So if for whatever reason, a tank was randomly in my driveway, i could use it?

:p

Even if you did why would you choose an AK for home defence?! I own an AK and it sits in a separate room locked in a cabinet. Loads of people in NZ own rifles as hunting is big here, yet I don't know any that feel the need to use them for home defence!

Very true, only a complete tool would use an assault rifle for home defence. One sure fire way to get your family killed or injured is to open fire with an assault rifle in a building. The rounds will fly through most internal walls and potentially through the skin of the building if it's timber.

If you happen to live in a Country where you need to defend your home, fear and noise are your best assets. The sound of cartridge being chambered in a pump action shotgun is enough to make most criminals think twice.

Luckily I live in a civilized Country. My home defence consists of a very aggressive diabetic moggy.

Duncan Balentine for Dragons Den put a bounty on someone who robbed his daughter officially and said officially that he will brake that persons arms personally. That is a strong statement and direct threat to cause grievous body harm to someone. I wonder how he got not in trouble for that statement.

as soon as you get pets (that walk) all house security goes out the window. I have an awesome alarm system in my house but cant turn it on as the cats get up in the middle of the night!

We live in a world of many dangerous people. So i protect my home in UK:

- 2 locks
- alarm
- strategically placed equalizers.

In USA.

- steel reinforced door with dead bolts locking from inside. The kind of steel door that a police ram wont open in 1 hour and or even direct RPG hit.

- bullet proof windows with inside steel shutters that will withstand AK 47 fire.
- 1911 with 4 clips under my bed from pillow side and ak 47 with 4 clips.
- 12 gauge by the door.

How about you?

BOO !!! :p

So you have imaginary guns, imaginary defences for an imaginary house you don't own in a country you don't live in.

I wish I had an imagination like yours :(

I think their imagination is quite mundane. Why not go the whole hog and imagine yourself to be a warrior wizard king who could defend his majestic castle himself with magic and swords, but who has an elite army unit of warriors and magi as the royal guard? Or a secret agent working for a unit so secret only a handful of people even know it exists, with a safe house concealed under an ordinary-looking house and filled with technology more advanced than any available to ordinary people, no matter how rich they are? It's secret spy kit, made by Q.

There is numerous examples of people brutally harming or Killing robbers and not just getting done for manslaughter but spending a few years in Jail.

There will be a perimeter zone, basically the contacts on all exterior doors and windows (and optionally a chime for other areas). Just set it to that.

Or

Wrap your cats in tinfoil so they don't set off any PIR's

I live in quite a nice area, but if it wasn't illegal I would be very tempted to attach the door handle of my bike shed to the trigger of a loaded crossbow mounted on the opposite wall.

Although I know that one day I would forget about it and go into the shed...
