Apart from the fact that we have unelected individuals that hold power, what I want is a democracy.

You do realize that the monarchy does not really hold any power today right? The Queen rarely (if ever?) blocks laws decreed by her government. Her government are who we elect.

Current monarchy is a figurehead, nothing more. It promotes tourism and personally I see no issues with it.

You can probably guess I am with the Maintain side.

Yet didn't leave for Canada and stayed in England the whole war?

Only because they didn't invade though. Their plane had its engine started up every morning to check it was good. Slightest sign of invasion and they would be in exile and Germany had more than the potential to walk over the UK from the mid to late 30's. Had they not done a preemptive strike on the Soviet Union it would have been easy.

Remember how easily the entire French and British armies were defeated and then left on Dunkirk?

Also, don't forget the public brought them to heel a little as they stayed well out of the way of the bombing that London endured.

I am struggling to see how thinking for her safety when she would obviously have been a target for the Germans is a bad thing?

I find it a hard topic.

I believe the monarchy is old hat and doesn't have it's place in the modern day, especially where politics is concerned. It's a lot of money and fuss for not much and i care not for them.

However, i do believe that the monarchy are the BEST ambassadors we could possibly have, in fact, probably the best in the world. They are somewhat internationally known and respected by many countries.
But is that relevant these days? I'm not sure.
They also bring in tourism, quite a substantial amount i would assume.

I would vote for less money, power and faff. I'm not sure what this would look like, if i'm honest.

Edit: For the interests of the poll, i voted to abolish as it's rather yes or no. Also, i'd always to prefer to vote against the right-winged ;)

Keep vote here.

It's interesting how there are currently 89 abolish votes yet hardly any people posting with a reason why.

3 easy ones come to mind

Cost the country money and are by Law guaranteed increases every year (some animals are more equal than others)
Have terrific wealth and could easily support themselves through true tour is and budgeting
Play a game of deceit with the public and engage in insider trading to generate dollar

Could list plenty more but they are more for my own subjective points. The above are fact

I'd love to see where these 'facts' came from. The first one is WAY off when you look at what the Royal family bring into the country.

Some people should just admit they don't like the Royals rather than make things up.

That's the kind of integrity which comes with being politically neutral IMO. There are no flies on her Maj. :)

The royal family don't bring anything to the country. People having tourism don't come to London just for seeing Buckingham Palace. Like I said earlier that report that asserted she makes £400m for the economy was exposed and taken apart to be total lies.

So did you go out and pick up litter for the Queen? Did you go and tell everyone to do that?

I admit freely I detest the Royal family. Have a look at how the Queen abandons her direct relations who have a mental disability. Then come back and tell me what a great person she is.

They generate quite a bit of tourism money, have their own diplomatic purpose (although not essential) and it is a core part of this countries culture and tradition.

The company i work for has a Queen Elizabeth range and a few other goods related to the royal family (despite having nothing to do with that sort of stuff) and we make a killing on those goods. Funnily enough it is foreign orders that really fluff those sales up!

Without the monarchy there would be one less thing stopping this country from becoming an utter, faceless ****hole with nothing to differentiate it from the rest of the world. I believe that having a monarchy is also very beneficial, it brings tourism, it promotes patriotism, it generates money.

I agree! :D

VisitBritain said:
the UK’s tourism body VisitBritain states that while international tourism is Britain’s third largest service export, with inbound tourism to Britain worth £26.2 billion, only some of that figure can be attributed to attractions and events with a connection to British monarchs and heritage. These are sites such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were married, though no exact figure can be gauged of the contribution of the royals on tourism revenues

Nope. Other sources when you look point categorically that tourism generated by Royal family is but a fraction of the general tourism budget.

Much of the wealth generated is through PR. We could also say war is a core part of this countries tradition too. Slavery too (royals again at the epicenter)and the stiff upper lip.

The Queen isn't even British  Wills is married to his cousin

Now you have me ranting lol

Can we keep the Monarchy but abolish every insufferable Royal sycophant and their bunting?

I voted Abolish, but this would do me :p

Our 2016 calendar at work is 'Kate and her beautiful babies'. :o

The missus turned on the TV on Saturday to be reminded that it was some birthday celebration ******** for the Queen, at which point we had to watch the entire thing while she complained about how annoyed she was with herself for forgetting as we should have gone

I'm not really against the Monarchy. They just don't matter much to me either way. It's the ceremony surrounding them that I'm not keen on, and the way vehement Royalists feel the need to make such a song and dance about everything. But then I'm not much for idolising anyone.

I'm happy to forget they exist for the most part.

Keep. It's part of our history, they don't have any real power anyway and they make us money. No reason at all to change it?

No they have to go because the daily mail says we spend a billionty pounds on watering their plants and spreading the caviar on their crackers and because REASONS.

At least this way the miserable sods that think the royals need to go have something to moan about which isn't going to change regardless. When they start moaning about actual, plausible things, that's when we need to start worrying.
