** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

Just got in from work and installed my new 2GB Corsair CM3X2GSD1066.

Results from Everest are as follows...

Read: 4110 MB/s
Write: 2840 MB/s
Copy: 2485 MB/s
Latency: 83.2ns

Which is actually a little bit faster than with just the onboard memory, especially the latency!

I would suggest it has an issue with certain types of ram. But I'm happy, it's flying along at the moment :D

Here's mine with the Kingston 2GB PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3

Read: 3974 MB/s
Write: 2841 MB/s
Copy: 2468 MB/s
Latency: 78.7ns

:)

It's an odd question that seems to have a mixed answer :p some have gotten faster results with 2GB whilst others have not! - It may well be the 2GB stick I had didn't mate well with the mobo on the 311c whereas another brand of 2GB does - similar to desktop PCs then in this case - well based on what other guys above have found from testing!

Edit*

Well looks like I won't be getting the Dell 13z with x4500MHD gfx card because according to AVS forums member testing the Intel IGP does not support fully VC-1 decoding for HD streams and so CPU usage jumps to 60%~ so not all 1080P movies will play completely smoothly on the 4500MHD it seems.

ION and all nVidia chipsets used on mobile devices however works with all HD streams (VC-1, DXVA etc).

I won't be wanting to get the 13z with nvidia gfx either because you have to have the chunky 8cell battery with it according to the Dell order page.

1201N it is then!

I really wanted to wait for one of those but just couldn't do it :(

Oh and those worried about the battery life should bear in mind that the Ion chiposet uses 3 times as much as the N270 CPU so upgrading to a 330 won't be the end of the world.

Of those who ordered one direct from HP with WWAN how long did it take to get yours?

I ordered on the 28th October when the site said expected within 2 weeks. The HP tracker currently says my order is expected 27th November and seems to keep adding one day as each day passes  Apparently their phone line isn't open weekends so will call Monday.

Thats a bummer, I was contemplating a Vostro 1220 which uses the 4500MHD but with a T6670. I wonder if the extra CPU power would compensate?

hp compaq mini 311 ram question

can you not just disable the onboard ram on hp mini and just use 2gb/3gb on ram slott, with faster clock speed ram.

i take it the spare ram slot only supports 2gb?

how much ram can the ion support fully?

maybe hp bios update could improve ram support?

coincidently what ram is the best for upgrading with if matching with onboard soldered ram?

For those looking to install XP Pro on this machine here is the way to do it.
Tools for the job:XP Pro SP3 source disc, nLite, PowerArchiver, CD burner and a blank disc, drivers from here http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.46_ion.html.

First, grab the driver and Using PowerArchiver open the .exe file. Sort the files by name and look for all the .inf files. Extract them to a folder on your dektop.
Next, copy the contents of the XP disc to another folder on your machine. Run nLite, select the XP source files you just copied, integrate the drivers you just extracted...do any other stuff you need to...creat the new ISO. Burn it and install with it.

No need to hit F6 during Setup. It works a dream!
Hope this is useful to someone.

I need to re-install XP and tried to do the above but the XP install is still not finding my hard drive. Anyone else have any luck with this? I tried to google more info and think it might be due to requiring txt type drivers rather than the pnp ones included in that link.
Does anyone know where I can get the right drivers from? I've also treid downloading the beta ones from the NVidia website but they don't seem to work and the HP chipset files from their website seem to be corrupt.

Any help would be appreciated.

I actually realised after my initial post that the C2D in the 13x would cope with it fine (ie: no slowdowns, just heavy CPU usage, probably 60%-75%) for VC-1 or the films the 4500MHD does not do hardware acceleration for - the Atom would just stutter endlessly but the ULV chip is much beefier in terms of raw power so would be perfectly fine.

I've ordered the 13z now anyway, will wait for it to arrive.

Will bung a 128 or 64GB SSD in there I think, I won't be using the 13z for storage, just media and portable desktop work + surfing so don't need that much space free.

That should give an hour or so more juice as well.

There is a thread over at MyHPMini concerning performance issues, freezes/stuttering and general low performance using the Nvidia nForce Serial ATA Controller.

Changing back to the Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller resolves these issues and improves performance greatly, just tested this and it seems the system is much more responsive :)

Photoshop CS4 is what I used on it, it ran quite ok actually! I would recommend a USB mouse though as the trackpad is not sensitive enough for accurate shopping!

The Nvidia IDE/SATA drivers have always been crap to be honest, I never use them on any of my systems.

Once I get my 311 back from HP I will be sure to test this out though, as they will send it back with them installed again! (it's in for repair, the speakers stopped working!)

I tried installing Win7 on the mini but it turned off at some point. Turned it on again and it was OK for a while tried to update and all of a sudden it turned off again. I turned it on and it works now. Any idea? Maybe I need drivers for win 7 and it is a power management issue? I did all this off battery but it has 60% juice now that I am in windows again ...

Edit: Windows update was trying to install nvidia driver for win7 .. once I got the message that it was "done and should restart" mini turned off just like that.

This is frustrating :(

The fan is a bit on the loud side as well .. do these things run hot or .. ?
