** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

Unless your PC doesn't boot for some reason, then you're screwed.

Not really.....

1. On a clean USB Flash Drive formatted FAT16 or FAT32, copy over an original 3651F04.fd BIOS file, and rename it to 3651.BIN.
2. Disconnect power supply and remove the battery.
3. Press and hold Win and B keys.
4. Connect the power supply and press the power button.
5. Release the Win and B keys after 3-5 seconds.
6. Recovery process will begin to load the BIOS image in memory.
7. After a few seconds the computer will start beeping every 2 seconds - a process of flash BIOS.
8. Computer shuts down automatically after flashing has finished.
9. Voila! your bacon has been saved.

:)

There is NO reason to use the tool when a 5 second (literally) few clicks of the mouse in Windows does the same thing with no ill effects. Just my 2p :)

And what few clicks in Windows may that be?

I have this badboy and i must say its a great bit of kit.

Put a 500GB HDD and 2GB corsair in her and she runs a gooden.

Oh and ION hack and fixed wireless problem.

What I don't get is that you go for example to the high street stores all the HP/Compaq netbooks have been updated with Win7, but why have they not updated the 311 (Not seen the 311 in a store)? Maybe there is no stock at OcUK because there is a shortage because HP are going to release a Win7 version :D

Help with Decision

I have been reading and tracking this thread for the past few weeks because I was adamant in getting the 311c but the other day I went to the shop and saw a few small laptops so now confused.

Should I still get the HP mini 311c or a small laptop?

What I want a netbook/laptop for -

Surfing the Net
Checking Outlook
Excel
Watching all types of video (thats why I chose the 311c in the first place)
Start playing PC games (this is why I may be having second thoughts)

Budget £350 and has to be smaller than a laptop, a little bit bigger than netbooks are okay.

Thats all for your help.

Surfing the Net - Check :D
Checking Outlook - Check :D
Excel - Check :D
Watching all types of video (thats why I chose the 311c in the first place) - Check :D
Start playing PC games (this is why I may be having second thoughts) - This ain't no pixel pusher, but it does handle some gaming surprisingly - Sims 3 runs great, but if your looking for hardcore FPS action, look elsewhere :)

However, when overall ease the backlog of parcel, there is no cut-off date.

[Edit: I've trawled through the thread and found a mention of the fan being always on by default, but fairly quiet. That would suit me fine.]

[Edit2: However after reading around the net I seem to find quite a few references (by reviewers who have experience of many machines) to it being relatively noisy. I think I'll take a step back from the buy button and think again.]

How quiet is the 311c? It has all the features I want/need from a Netbook, in a nice (and decently priced) package. But it'll mostly be used for writing on, and I value peace & quiet while working.

My existing laptop whines like a clogged hoover after a short period of use on my lap, or any other surface likely to limit air circulation underneath. I haven't found any pictures of the base of the Compaq, so I'm not sure what vents there are down there that I'd need to keep clear.

Ideally there'd be an option to underclock the thing and run it at 'just fast enough to run OpenOffice', minimising heat build-up. That's probably asking a bit much though... from both Compaq and the humble Atom, which is slow enough already without tying one had behind its back. :-)

Andrew McP

PS I prefer a machine which makes a little noise all the time to one which works in silence for a while, then kicks the fan on in full speed mode for a short time.

You don't order a kit, you order a stick :p and OcUK only sell 2, the Corsair and Kingston - either of which is fine!

1GB would be the better option.

I thought the Kingston did not work one yours?

Looking to buy the 311 tomorrow... I also want to buy the right ram :)

Overclock the 311, guide HERE

Working and tested by many members, so far I am stable at 1900mhz :D

Yup. This really is turning out to be a wonderful gem of a netbook :D, so many tweaks and hacks for this little diamond of a system, I have never regretted getting one since day one :)

Now, my 'N' card from eBay, well that's another story lol, but I'm sure to get my money back as I used Paypal, just gotta find where to buy another one.....hmm......so many challenges lol!! :)

Still waiting for my N card from there too scara!!

I lodged a claim with Paypal and am getting a refund actioned. Nothing but the run around from this seller, excuses and stalling tactics. Paypal problem resolve time limit was fast approaching so I needed to take steps right away.

Awful service (ordered on 29th Oct and still waiting!!) and laughable responses to my emails. Have ordered another from a UK seller on eBay, its on its way already with a tracking number, should get tomorrow :)
