** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

I'm assuming that the US version is 1Gb soldered, with a 2Gb socket... I think I'm sold as to what to get now, HP are going to be getting an order from me in December when I visit my girlfriend in Tucson ;)

Update:

Had another email from HP confirming that the UK version comes with a 1gig stick of ram that is not soldered onto the motherboard but they said that the netbook's maximum ram capacity was indeed 1gig, no more!

Come on OcUK, asked you to find out this info a few days ago. Thought you would be able to get this info for us?

Yea, the USA version of the netbook will work with more ram.

UK version won't. Here is email i had from HP:

As per your query I would like to inform you that no, the memory not soldered to the motherboard it have a slot. I check your product Specifications and I found that your notebook is support only 1 GB ram not more then it. I wonder how the the US model obtains 3Gb? I'll wait for the inevitable dissection pictures. Either way I'm buying it from the states, works out a bit cheaper.. £325 with an external DVD burner. Whack a 320gb Scorp Black + 2Gb of DDR3 in there and it all comes to £420 or something...

Although, I was looking at the DV2, which offers slightly more umf...

Hmmmm, ive been following notebookreview forums on the us model of the mini 311 and the users on their forums had exactly the same queries before anyone got their hands on the netbook. On every other HP netbook, you can upgrade the RAM. Really easy.
You just can't buy it with 2GB RAM installed. Because of Microsoft's XP limits. You've been able to have 2GB of RAM installed on models like the Mini 110. On the cusp of windows 7 HP want to limit this particular netbook to 1gb when everyone other one in their range is upgradeable?

Read this page scroll down half way and some forum users are being told by HP reps that the ram is non upgradeable and that the max allocation is 1gb.

It proved to be completely wrong and proved that HP reps dont actually have a clue what they are talking about. The users on those forums actually got their netbooks with 1GB of memory onboard and an extra dimm slot free for 2gb stick. It actually was the same case for people varying models of the mini equipped with n270 and n280 atoms.

This just has me to believe that HP are just terrible and detailing proper specs of their products. Look at the video memory figure on the page. Its completely inaccurate. It states Up to 319 MB of ram, but if youve researched the ion chip you'll know that with 1gb of ram you can allocate 128mb for graphics with 2gb, 256mbs. The only way we'll really find out is when someone gets their hands on a uk model and has a look!

Not sure how kean I'd be on these, the ION is basically an onboard 8400GS with a few extra goodies, playing anything HD would still absolutely hammer it, this is the solo core Atom and not the 300 series dual cores (which is good on the power front but means multitasking is a complete no no when playing HD stuff).

Well, my answers have come direct from HP (Further up the thread). What more can i say?

Also, if you look at the USA model and the UK model specs they both have different model numbers!

First of all, CPU usage is generally under 20% when running 1080p due to the Ion (that's the entire point).

Secondly why would you be running a HD video file and doing something else anyway?

And lastly, no netbook has the 3xx series because they use 8w compared to the 2.5w/4w of the 2xx series which would hammer battery life.

The N270 is 4w and not 2.5w and for most senisble things I'd use a netbook for I'd need a dual core processor full stop, and that includes HD, I might want to alt tab out, check my mails and alt tab back in, I do it ALL THE TIME. From the benchmarks I've seen NO WAY does the N270 with on an ION chipset running 1080p use only 20%.

No, it isn't. The 230 is 4w which is why I said 2.5w/4w.

As this video shows it's around 20-25% CPU usage running 1080p and here is another one both playing back 1080p smoothly and encoding 1080p video at the same time:
