** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

I ended up getting the 311c-1030sa (the one with the in-built 3G). Got an additional 2gb ram and upgraded to Windows7. Also unlocked the ION-LE to a full ION. Love the long battery life and the HDMI port. My last laptop had only about 40 minutes run time on full charge.

Thanks for all the help from this thread.

Hi freaky
Can you tell me exactly how `you` did the unlocking to full ion?
I followed the guide on myhp and when it boots from the stick it asks about entering new date?
So i just shut it off at that point as it obviously does not follow along the line of the guide
thanx

It took a few attempts but, as you say, it doesn't really follow the guide. As far as I remember I followed the instructions on this page http://myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=2989 and it worked fine. All you are doing is changing the OS from XP to Vista and it will be recognised in Vista or Win7 as a Full ION.

I'm pretty sure I'm about to buy a 311c today. What I need to know is whether it matters what 311c I buy. I'm seeing a lot of different 311c models: 1010SA; 1020SA; 1030SA; and 1101SA. What version does OCUK sell, and will the models have any affect on what I want to do; namely upgrade the RAM and install some flavour of linux for dual booting.

Hey, yeah getting paid tomorrow keen on the 311c and the last post above re ram upgrade would be highly interested to know the same details if anyone could post.

Got mine this afternoon from a different supplier, 311c 1101SA £310 paid, got the 2gb kingston as recommended on another page kvr1066d3s7/2g just installed, first time i've installed the ram on a laptop/ netbook and it was very easy, such a cheap way to speed the little rocket up, will post what i think of it in a week, any one know what the battery life is like on average movies, music etc?
Know doubt the battery life will be better than my 6530g acer- nice laptop but abit OT for what i needed and the battery is rubbish 2 hrs max.

You guys have convinced me to take the plunge.

Just before a I pull the trigger:

HP Compaq Mini 311c Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz ION 11.6" Netbook - XP Home (VJ555EA#ABU)

+

Kingston 2GB (1x2GB) PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3 SODIMM

+

windows 7 Professional

.. should be ok and work fine together?

The plan is for a dedicated Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Planescape playing on the train machine, with Facebook and ebay browsing for the misses in the evening.

Looks fine. Not sure why spending the extra on W7 Pro though, Home Premium should do most things you need, and the XP mode is basically a virtual machine with Pro if that was your reason for the purchase.
BG at the very least worked fine with Vista, and stuff like BGTutu just made it work better.

Cheers for that.

I get MS products as perk of the job, so might as well put on pro or ultimate. Do you find the virtual machine works ok? I was toying with dual booting XP and Windows 7, but won't bother if the virtual machine odes the job.

Have you considered getting crucial 1333 for better overclocking capabilities?
Also what about a model with the 3g card already in?
As is a bit of a fiddle to get one working if it was not pre installed by HP
(might not apply to your needs but i thought i would mention it)

I wasn't aware that 3g was an option. Cheers - i 'll have a look about.

//3G would be nice but for another £50 ish i'll give it a miss.

Mine should be arriving tomorrow - is there anything I need to know before installing Windows 7 driver wise, or just bang the disk in and good to go?

hopefully when you say bang the disk in you mean in your external drive :) joking aside cant think I had any problems installing 7 on mine, all the drivers are now on their website too, might be an idea to get them before hand
