** HP Compaq Mini 311c-1010SA Intel Atom N270 ION 11.6" Netbook @ £314.99 inc VAT **

Right ive just sold my Samsung N210 i dont think i can get away with 1024x600 resolution any longer, so im now in two minds to get one of these or hold out a little while to see what ion2 is like.......... one question i looked through this entire thread today again and couldnt see a picture showing but is there a hdd compartment cover on these?

There's a single panel on the back with a HDD, wireless and RAM logo, so you can access it very easily. I've swapped out the HDD on mine with a Vertex and is was pretty easy. RAM speed is 1066.

Yep HD swaps easy. I would go for 1333 memory, more overclocking overhead. I went for 1066 and the limit to my overclocking seems to be the memory.

right well im due one tomorrow ;) ordered some corsair 1333 ram too, ive got a spare 320gb hdd ill put in for now even though its only 5400rpm, what confuses me is there seems to be so many model numbers of the mini 311c..........

You can use the standard windows app (included in the unwhitelisted bios also available on myhpmini). Be very careful with the settings, some people have bricked their mini's. The settings are a little more technical than your usual bios, and lack of ability to reset the cmos = bricked if wrong settings.

So far I have had good results (using a 1066 Corsair 2gb stick), turning off all spread spectrum settings, and in performance using linked 3:2 ratio, 512 + 224. This gives approx 2.2ghz cpu and 1100 mhz ddr3 ram.

Most of the time if you get a blank screen extracting the added ram will let you back in the bios.

Everest memory scores with Corsair 2gb stick

OC with Bios 2.2ghz 1100 memory
4888 mb/s read
3634 mb/s write
3283 mb/s copy
83.1ns latency

Overclocking ADVICE

I would like to warn all 311 owners who atempts to overclock to be VERY VERY Careful.

When overclocking the 311 read this thread.
http://myhpmini.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=3744

The 311 does not have a clear CMOS so if you push the system too far then it will become bricked. If its just a little too much you can remove the extra ram module and get back i nthe bios. BUT be very very careful there are lots on that forum who now have a paper weight 311.

Just a heads up..

Oh and i have my 311 solid at 2.3ghz 1066mhz Ram so just to show it is fine if your steady.

Also, you can overclock safely just using the Asrock tool from Windows to get 1.8-2.1 stable without doing the bios mod. I can get a steady 1.9 doing that, not decided if it's worth the risk to get a 2.2-2.4 overclock yet...

The max i could get as with many was 1.9 N270. Having the bios mod is a gamble but it looks that most reports show 2.3-2.4ghz is rock solid.

At last my 311 feels responsive and up to much much more.

Is this still a good deal for the specificatons? Is there anything else out there that is better?

How about an N280 with ION and Windows7?

(Edit - really have to update my sig. Haven't had that system for over a year!)

not really, no. theres little, to no difference between the n270, and the n280. Just get the most basic one from ocUK, with an extra 2gb of memory, and just slap windows 7 on it. sorted.

There is very little difference between the N270 and N280:

PC Mark 05 CPU Test:
N270 1444 Points
N280 1479 Points

Like Loque said, just go with the N270, and add memory to taste ;)
