HP Microserver+XPEnology

Your USB drive is only used to boot up the OS.

The OS itself and all the appdata and config files are stored on a small partition on your HDDs so if you just wiped the USB drive then it won't have affected the OS at all which is why it would remember all your settings.

If that's the case, can I presumably just use a newer image on my USB boot drive which will enable me to upgrade DSM to the latester version?

Yeah if you write the updated img file to the usb it will boot up and it will detect that you have an SHR partition and then it should let you keep all your existing data.

Please have a backup of any important data just in case as I think I've seen people write about it overwriting all their partitions.

It will overwrite the OS partition though so you will loose your system config and apps and app configs I believe.

Well, just updated my two to v5. All went well.
I copied my vender files to the desktop and re-applied them after all was installed. Rebooted and all was as it was.
So, I basically went through the same process as originally. ALL my settings were retained and the disks untouched. I had to reapply the permissions to user groups to allow me to mount my volumes, but that was the only moment I ever felt in any doubt that it was seamless.
I only just got used to the old one and at the moment this seems a bit all over the place. My initial impression is that it is all fluff and very little new stuff to play with.
Still can't get it to start up after power failure. It just ignores my request.
Seems there is an update already. I don't won't to mess up like last time, so would appreciate any confirmation that the previously outlined process works.

Usual thing though, just reporting my experience. Yours may be different, so backup please!

Question - do the made up serials work for a myds account and is it worth having? Cheers.

It feels like I am turning off Jurassic Park because the Raptor fences are out!!!

I did as above and used this img: http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1028

I plugged it in after using the vender file patcher and Synology Assistant instantly picked up the correct MAC :D All files and folders are still there, and nothing has changed on the volume & I can also now see the USB shared over the network!

However - it still won't let me update to the latest version. I have to be doing something wrong? Is the USB meant to be unplugged while I do the upgrade?

EDIT: When I enter "sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /[email protected]> /[email protected]" as a command via Putty (I am entering it as a single, long command like that, right?!) it says no such file or folder or something.

EDIT2: Oh hang on, do I manually have to edit the grub file after patching the vender file using the patcher app? Do I have to be on 4.3 to update using this process, or will my current image be able to do it?

I would make sure you have a backup mate.

Tried to upgrade to update 4 using the above but having problems, I can't see to download the update I just get the message "Connection failed. Please check your Internet connection."

Any ideas on how I can get it working?

OK I have managed to get update 4 to apply now had to disconnect from the internet first and follow this thread http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2049

I do however seem to have quite a few processes running on the box I am most worried about the httpd processes as I don't have WebDAV enabled or anything. Has my boxed been hacked?

Absolutely my experience too. Couldn't actually get any method to work, but can't guarantee I didn't do it wrong.

I'm on dsm 5 and just waiting for some kind soul to confirm what actually works.

Good news: I am now on DSM 4.3-3810 after updating via USB. HURRAY! :)
Bad News: I still can't update to 4.3-3827, but now I get a different error. I follow this word for word http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=25475385&postcount=97 then just get a pop-up which is blank. I click ok, and the update doesn't go anywhere :(

Any ideas?

Deuse posted the link to the DSM 5 BETA link on the last page of the thread. In there are details about the upgrade, etc. Specifically it should be done in exactly the same way as before but here's a link (from the DSM 5 BETA thread) which explains exactly how you should go through the update process. It's on page 2 of the thread here.

1. First check if you're able to download update 3 from the GUI (Control Panel, DSM Update) - Download the update.
- 1a. If not able to download, connect/login with putty/telnet (user: root)
- 1b. Remove /[email protected] (rm /[email protected])
- 1c. Now try to donwload update 3 from GUI again (Control Panel, DSM Update)
2. Connect/login with putty/telnet and execute these 2 commands:
CODE: SELECT ALL
sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /[email protected] > /[email protected]1
mv /[email protected]1 /[email protected]

3. Install the update from GUI (Control Panel, DSM Update)
Where exactly does your error (or lack of error) occur in that sequence?

I was following this post by deuse:

I assume you go to 'scheduled tasks' in the DSM. From there you can run the script. But when you go back, it sometimes starts, sometimes not (tried a few times) and always gives a blank dialog box with the only option to accept ok.

Perhaps it is because I have tried to install before, but I'm wary now I've just got a new DSM5 install done.

Is there some other step or have I got something wrong?

Any help is much appreciated.

Yeah scheduled tasks in the DSM. You only need to run it once though directly after you have downloaded the update. You can then delete it.

I prefer to do it with WinSCP and Putty though as you can then see any error messages (not sure if you can with scheduled tasks or not - presumably you can in the logs or something but it just seems like more hassle to me)

Anyway - I made a little walkthrough with pics and descriptions of my exact process (that I did just now successfully) which can hopefully help.

Let me know if it helps :)

That's absolutely wonderful sk82jack. Really appreciate the effort.
I will have to fire up windows and try to follow exactly. Never used windows properly until I just got this server (lifetime mac user), so everything is alien!
Thanks again. I will report back when I have had a chance to try.

UPDATE - Perfect - thanks a million!

I wonder if the problem was trying to run the two lines together? I think it may work through the DSM if you run each one at a time (lack of basic knowledge!). Assuming it is the correct directory (again, no real clue).

It would be great to do it through the DSM though as it would be a simple matter on a mac : )

Just as an additional observation, after this update I don't seem to have all the applications available that were certainly there on 4.3, but as I don't use any, can't guarantee there were there on 5. But I think they were. By applications, I mean generic headings like media and lists of applications like Plex etc.
There just seem like the Synology ones now.

Which update? V5? yes it will do that as it's a beta. That's(as I said)I use a spare HD and play for a few days.

Nice walkthrough dude :) it will help the new comers to this os.

Cheers man :)

It should work through DSM together as that's how I did it on 4.3 before I upgraded (and deuse did it on 5 I think?) so I dunno why it wasn't working for you but at least you're there now.

I have Plex running on mine with DSM 5 so I'm ot sure why you can't find it.

For me in the multimedia section there is:

Audio Station Beta
Download Station
iTunes Server Beta
Logitech Media Server
Media Server Beta
Photo Station Beta
Plex Media Server
Video Station Beta

I can't remember if I upgraded to 5 with Plex already installed though...?

It was a bit of a hassle to get it running properly but I got it there in the end using the help from this thread: http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2297 (note post 1 and 2nd post from bottom)

I've been an idiot (got in first).
I was viewing recommended packages, not all. To be fair, you have to really open up the window to take much more of your monitor to see the options : )
I'm considering installing plex, more of an experiment really. So that link is really helpful.
Cheers.
