HP Microserver+XPEnology

What version are people currently running on their boxes?? I am currently using DSM 4.3-3810 Update 3 but thinking of updating it when I saw someone here had been hacked.

I can see that DMS 4.3-3827 is currently available to download.

Do I just need to create this scheduled task below and then run the update after using download only option?

sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /[email protected]> /[email protected]
mv /[email protected] /[email protected]

You have to go to the update section and download the update first.

Then go and create the scheduled task (or just run the two commands in Putty as 'root').

Then go back to updates and apply.

In Putty as root run 'rm /[email protected]' (or run it as a scheduled task) and then try the process again from the start.

Strange. Still getting the same error.

I did it through Putty (as Root) and when running "sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /[email protected]> /[email protected]
mv /[email protected] /[email protected]" it told me "sed: /[email protected]: No such file or directory"

:(

EDIT - I didn't realise you had to change serial number before the update would go ahead! I've downloaded the vender file patcher, but no idea where to locate the vender file!

EDIT2 - After running ' dmesg | grep "eth" ' command as root I have got a MAC, but unsure if it is the 'real' MAC?

I don't actually believe this.....so I've been messing on with this since 8am this morning. Finally manage to get into the USB boot stick using Ext2Mgr...and guess what - there's no vendor file!!!!! Just boot / rd / zimage files!!!

ARGH!!!!! I could actually start crying :(

EDIT 1: Running DS3612xs_3202-Repack.pat / microserver-dsm-4.2-02.05.2013

EDIT2: Contents of grub.conf below (nowhere to edit MAC it seems? Do I have a really old version or something? *concerned*)

Edit your grub.conf file that's on the usb stick and add

#vender /vender show
#hw_model
kernel /zImage root=/dev/md0 ihd_num=0 netif_num=4 syno_hw_version=DS3612xs mac1=your macaddy mac2=XXXXXXXX sn=B3J4N00xxx

And add 3 numbers were the Xs are. Reboot and see.

That didn't work :(

Obviously I replaced 'your macaddy' with the one gained from the command i used earlier, but using Synology Assistant, it reports the old incorrect MAC. I just added 777 (random) onto the end of the sn=B3J4N00 and that didn't work.

When I browse to the grub file again on my Pc, it has reverted to what it was before I added your section onto the end

The screws can be removed using the Allen key which is on the inside of the front 'door' of the Microserver.

If anyone can help with my upgrade woes, I will be eternally grateful!

Ok I am ordering another HPMS - this is a 54L not 40L. So I will have 8GB non ECC RAM and 2x 2GB (from each server) ECC RAM.

I was thinking one a server Windows 8 Server ontop of bare metal ESXI. and pick a RAM cfg. It'll run headless, I was gunna have a profile for each fam member then cfg the comps to login to the server. So all our docs etc are roaming.

Idea is a big drive for OS and USER data, profiles. Then add 3TB ones for TV/movie and a SSD for IP CAM.

The other server will be similer but not 24/7 so backups, media that's not always needed. But its gunna use a hd6450 and upto a TV downstairs like a HTPC. AIRPLAY etc

It looks like 4.2 (or at least the version you have installed) doesn't create a vendor file. I never installed 4.2 so I'm not sure if I can help but I would recommend updating to one of Trantors later builds.

Edit : just realised you've already set up all your programs and stuff and it seems like an upgrade would mean you have to set it all up again.

One other thing - try changing the syno_hw_version to the RSXXXX rather than the DSXXXX suggested in the code as your grub.config seems to use the RSXXXX instead

Thedean burn the image to a spare stick and you should get a vender file.
Edit the vender file using the app and then copy it over to your stick on the Nas.

Just make sure you have the real mac addy.

Thanks for all your help so far guys, really appreciate it.

Any image, or my image (microserver-dsm-4.2-02.05.2013)?

If I use Win32DiskImager to put the img on the usb, then browse to it, there's still no vender file. Any other ideas?

Still the same...error 21 and after updating the UBS drive, rebooting the Microserver, then checking the usb again on my Pc, still no vender file :(

OK so after a little messing around it turns out that there is a second partition on the USB that you can't see through Windows+Ext2Fsd.

Plug the USB into the server as normal and SCP in as root. Go all the way back up to the root of the drive and look for the USB mounted folder, so "volumeUSB#".

If you go into the folder there should be two folders within there. "usbshare#-1" and "usbshare#-2".

In usbshare#-1 you will see the files that you saw via windows.

In usbshare#-2 you should see the infamous vender file :D along with a few others.

So transfer it to your desktop or whatever, do the edit and then transfer it back and HOPEFULLY you should be good to go.

Let us know how you get on.
