HP Microserver+XPEnology

Hi all,

I've got my N54L DSM box setup with two raid 1/mirrored volumes (each volume/array consists of 2x1TB drives); does anyone know if under DSM you can safely upgrade the drives in a (single) volume/array by pulling and replacing a drive and letting it rebuild the array and once that's complete, pull and replace the last drive?

Or am i better off shifting the data off the volume, upgrading both drives (at the same time), recreate the volume/array and then shifting the data back?

I would assume that feature would work 100% because thats the whole point of RAID1.

USB Stick edition:

1) (DOWNLOAD THE FILES)
Download the following files:
DS3612xs_4.2-3211_x64_Microserver-20130612.img
DS3612xs_4.2-3211_x64_Microserver-20130612.pat
Use this link to download the files:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B_Edi7OdbFZla2NPa3MtNkFia3c&usp=sharing

save them both to your desktop

----------------------------------------------------------------------

2) DOWNLOAD THE IMAGER
Download Win32 Disk Imager from here:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Win32-Disk-Imager-Download-173006.html

save this to your desktop and decompress the file to a folder

----------------------------------------------------------------------

3) SETUP THE USB STICK
Insert a USB stick into your PC and launch the Win32DiskImager, select the .img file, select the USB drive and then click on write

N3NnF0W.jpg

----------------------------------------------------------------------

4) LOAD IT UP
Once completed, remove the USB stick and insert it in the microserver, ensure you are booting from the USB stick and let it load, give it at least 5 minutes for everything to load up, there will be a load of lines of text etc.. (trust me give it at least 5 minutes) – (I am running this headless – without a screen)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

5) SYNOLOGY ASSISTANT
From a PC connected on the same network, launch the following site:

http://find.synology.com/#

(this is the sinology web assistant)

This should find your HP microserver, when found (remove your USB stick from the microserver (yes whilst it still on), once removed - click on connect:
fWHH0tM.jpg
(default login is ‘admin’ and no password) – of course change this as you wish

(also keep note of the I.P. address)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

6) ADDING THE .PAT FILE
Now you will need to configure your microserver, follow the on screen instructions:

You will be prompted to select the default .pat file or to select your own, choose the latter option and browse to your desktop and select the DS3612xs_4.2-3211_x64_Microserver-20130612.pat file.
At this stage you can also set up your hard drives, i.e. the raid configuration you would like (select the manual option) or it will set it up as raid 5 as default (depending on how many drives you have)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

7) RESTART & CONFIG
Once done, you will be prompted to restart, shut down and reinsert your USB stick back in the microserver and restart the microserver, wait a couple of minutes and open your browser on the PC and in the address bar type in the IP address, enter your user / pass and login

----------------------------------------------------------------------

8) CONFIGURATION / HDD HIBERNATION
Click on Start and follow the wizard or select ‘control panel’ and manually select your config:
8YAuRMq.jpg

under control panel / hardware / HDD hibernation / select the spindown time for your hard drives – least is 10 minutes)

IMPORTANT, once you have saved all your settings, remove the USB stick from the microserver, this needs to be done to let the hard drives spin down, with the USB stick in the drives do no spin down (a bug)

Just remember:

When you are booting your microserver, the USB stick needs to be inserted
When you have booted up, remove the USB stick

----------------------------------------------------------------------

9) OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL MODULES
If you want to insert additional modules, select ‘terminal’ and enable SSH service, this is optional (I did add additional modules to allow USB etc.. but removed them as I didn’t need them), you will need to download WinSCP and manually copy the required files into the lib/module folder – again optional.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

10) ADDITIONAL APPS
ArTbLrx.jpg

You can also select package manager and install a few nifty little add ons, like Antivirus, Audio Station, Cloud Station, ITunes server, Plex, Mobile DS etc…

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have a little play with setting and familiarise yourself with sinology before transferring your files over.

Speeds are fantastic using Synoology, it is 100mb+ both ways :D :

Synology is great using the microserver headless, i.e. without a keyboard / mouse / monitor

enjoy

Hi all, I'm trying to follow this post but I cant find where to download the img and pat files from?

The N54L is dual core 2.2Ghz, a Synology is more like dual core 800Mhz. Also more Ram in the N54L, just means it can handle everything easier.

Couple that with the fact a 4 bay Synology is about 400 notes with no disks and an Ñ54L is now about £80-90.

+1

I love mine...

My Synology I had only copied files at around 30-40mb/s due to low performance hardware spec. But now my HP server does it like a boss!

I'm lost already lol. I downloaded the img file and installed that - now the server looks like its finished and running, didn't see anywhere to install the pat file?

Once the img file has been booted from you need to go to the IP address of the new server in a web browser. It will then allow you to install the pat file.

Synology assistant is good for finding the unit, or you should be able to use - find.synology.com/# in a web browser to find it.

Load up the synology assistant program on your main PC, it will find the NAS/HP server if the USB pen is done correctly. it will setup the HP/NAS box and then select manual installation and seletc the custom pat file you should have downloaded.

Something like this.....

Select connect and the load screen will pop up in your web browser to install the pat file.

just downloaded the assistant - still cant see where to select the manual install and the pat file hmmmm. Looks like its already set up and working?

Five drives? Where have you sat your fifth drive? And does the motherboard on the server have more SATA ports? I havent checked.

Mines an N54L.

1-4 are the 4 front bays.
5 is the e-sata port
6 is the extra internal SATA port (designed for the ODD drive to use) - this one I have connected a drive in the ODD bay to.

Can do this due to the BIOS mod that makes the two extra ports work properly.

In the assistant what does it say under Status?

said it was ready - I was confused as I re-wrote the image on the usb stick but somehow was still installed? just swapped a HDD, formatted and re-written the usb image now its working as a new install and allowed me to select the pat file. Looking more promising this time cheers chaps :)

does anyone use DDNS? Guess we cant sign up for the synology service due to not having a serial number to enter?

You won't be able to use Quickconnect but EZ-Internet works just fine for me on DSM 5.0, you have to register with synology but I did not have to input any sort of serial. Not tested since upgrading to 5.1 though as I only port forward from my router when I need to tinker away from home.
