HP Microserver+XPEnology

Hi guys,

Has anyone set up NFS shares to a raspberry pi using this, I can't seem to access my shares from NFS only SMB. I can see them just not access the folders?

Just setup a Microserver with 5.1 - 5022 update 4. 2GB RAM, 2 x 250GB and 2 x 500GB Drives as a JBOD (not worried about redundancy as this is a backup of backups).

I couldn't believe how easy it was - start to finish in under 10 minutes.

What are everyone's must install packages?

what makes a HP MicroServer running DSM more capable than a Synology running DSM? Surely they would be identical in features?

Nothing, apart from price and expandability... You can get a large storage solution with a decent interface (although I'd love it to have some form of cluster aware file system and manager) for a total price that is a fraction of a true synology system that performs the same or better.

The N54L is dual core 2.2Ghz, a Synology is more like dual core 800Mhz. Also more Ram in the N54L, just means it can handle everything easier.

Couple that with the fact a 4 bay Synology is about 400 notes with no disks and an Ñ54L is now about £80-90.

A quick Q all (and sorry if its been asked before!)

Im on DSM 4.2 (on an N54L) - can I just update through control panel with (theoretically) no loss of data ?

Cheers

If you want to move to DSM 5.1, you'll need to update the USB stick (or virtual machine) with the new boot image and then install the 5.1 file. If you're talking about another version of 4.xxx, sorry I have no idea!

Cheers !

Yeah, im wanting to go to 5.1

So I just update the files, re-boot from the USB with no data loss ?

Re-image the USB drive with the new 5.1 image; then install the 5.1 PAT file - you'll be asked during setup if you want to keep the existing data (and/or settings).

However, i'd recommend that you backup anything important just incase!

When I updated from 5 to 5.1, I had to reinstall. It kept the data drives intact but removed all my settings, download manager setup and my config files... No biggie really, but if you can back them up, do so. After that it is really easy to get it going on 5.1. Using the new image you can update to update 4 just by clicking update in DSM. 5.2 is still beta and won't be out until a new boot image is created.

I'd love Synology to release this as a formal bit of software. I'd pay good money for a trouble free auto-updating system... I just don't want the hardware!

I came back to this thread to ask about updating too. Looks like you beat me to it by a few hours :p.

Just upgraded from 4.x to 5.1-5022 Update 4 :).

Is there any way to get the MyDS/heartbeat functionality to work again in this version? I know it worked previously on 4.x.
If not, are there any free (or at least cheap) alternatives that include the heartbeat functionality?

I followed the tutorials on xpenology's site:

Grab the files you need from the following links:
http://www.xpenology.nl/boot-images/ - XPEnoboot_DS3615xs_5.1-5022.3
http://www.xpenology.nl/xpenology-software/ - DSM 5.1-5022 (Main) and DSM 5.1-5022 Update 4
Note: If you don't still have them installed from last time, Synology Assistant and Win32DiskImager are available on the same page as the DSM files.

Then follow these guides: (very little has changed, other than some screen layouts)
Setting up the USB (just involves putting the latest version's image file on): http://www.xpenology.nl/hardware-installatie/

Installing DSM 5.1: http://www.xpenology.nl/installation-dsm-5-1/
Note: Make sure you skip to step 20 after step 6 (unless you want to overwrite your data).

Update to DSM 5.1-5022 update 4: http://www.xpenology.nl/installation-dsm-5-1-5022-update-4/

I noticed just before going to bed last night that the upgrade had disabled my email notifications. They are working fine now that I've set them up again though.
