HP Microserver+XPEnology

Otherwise goose, it seems running xpenology on a VM allows the ilo to control fan speed... Though how to do this simply is beyond me... Would you need a hdd in the 2.5 optical bay to install an OS to?

I might have to resort to another OS, kinda had my heart set on DSM though :(

I dont suppose you could explain what iLo actually is?

[Edit] So I managed to login to the iLo thingy and according to that my fan is running at 10% but I can still hear it humming and buzzing away loud enough to be distracting :(

10% whilst dsm is running? That's much better than all the threads I've read before that says about 40% with dsm! Could it be the drive(s)?

Change the fan then? That is do able for both the psu and the case/heatsink fans

I'd love to change them but I was under the impression the case fan had some bizarre 5pin connection that takes a lot modding to allow for an alternate fan to run.

DSM wasn't running, I was just in the bios whilst poking around the iLo interface.

Well touch wood I got it all set up... Doesn't seem very noisy this end, cant distinguish it over my current PC and external USB drive. Will see what its like when other equipment is powered down.

stupidly, I have the usb stick in the front socket and its bright green... Other than that, I'm liking this setup!!

Also look up the scripts that enable the cpu governor to drop the cpu speed, otherwise you will find that it is running at 100% speed rather than throttling back when not needed, that will help save more power and drop the fan speed if it is on OS control.

Dsm resource manager says CPU is at 7%most of the time... And fans seem low so I think maybe I got lucky??

Here's a question though - how do I safely power off? If I use the dsm "turn off" link I lose contact with the NAS, but the power lights on the box stay green and the box is still "on"... Hmmmmmm.

Are you using OS control or the HP BIOS power management control? That can make a difference; i.e. my Dell R410 set to Bios Control is quiet when using a non power aware os, but I get better performance with it on OS control when running vSphere.

Sorry. Blizzard - would that sort my power-off issue? Or am I simply meant to power off through dsm then physically switch the server off with a long power button press?
At present I have power setting to default, not OS control

No, sorry that would deal with power management, i.e. fan/cpu speeds... At the moment, xpenology (without the power button script) does not power off from a bare metal install, you have to shut down from within DSM... Although I am surprised that the system isn't shutting down after a DSM shutdown, my Dells shutdown fine...

FINALLY
Got my nas to install 5592 :D
Not sure what I did different to previous attempts but after a reboot all disks were seen

Hmmm not ideal... But I would assume if I power off from dsm interface and I can no longer access the dsm interface, and the hdd light is not blinking on the box, then I am OK to just turn it off.

I'm not up to sorting out scripts to allow button power off- looks like it invoves many steps that are beyond me!!

Next time.I shall keep a monitor connected to the server when I shut down and see what happens...

Seems that first power down was a one off - behaving as expected now! Nicely running at 23W in hibernation up to 32W when accessing the two drives (SHR with redundancy).
I'll probably sort out a schedule to start and stop the server to avoid being permanently on.

Otherwise, next task is to install plex as a "toy". I have some old avi files with non standard codecs (not sure what codecs they are) but windows won't play the video for them, only sound. Does anyone know if plex comes with a wealth of codecs? I understand that plex will transcode into a compatible file to a player?

To summarise the previous 33 pages, is this pretty easy to install and use? Got my gen8 yesterday and can't decide what OS to put on it.

Guys, is there a way I can do wake up on LAN or something? I don't often use the server so it would be nice to have it go into a very low power mode for 75% of the time?

I would imagine the boot file is to load onto USB to boot fromm. The dsm will be the OS install. If you boot from the USB then navigate to find.synology.com from a computer on the same network, then the os will be downloaded automatically from synology. You shouldn't need to download the dsm software if you do that.
