*** HP Reverb G2 Owners Thread ***

I just installed my new x570 tomahawk with a 5800x. I thought the 570 mobo issue was fixed now but looking here that is maybe not the case :(

Got a lot of downloadibg Todo as forgot to back up steam library so 45 games (3TB) downloading on my 20mb internet..
After that I will set up headset. Fingers crossed. It worked ok on my old x99 5820k system.

Also, Steam recommended 68% resolution scaling which I assumed would look terrible since I needed over 130% SS to get my G1 to look sharp, however it actually looks just like my G1 at 140%.

Bumping up to 100% SS on the G2 didn't look noticeably different aside from the terrible frame-rates.

I’m very surprised you don’t see a difference between 68% and 100%. Be aware all the Valve steam environments and alyx, the lab etc use auto resolution scaling, so don’t use those to compare.... it felt like a new headset when I upgraded to the 3070 because everything automatically looked even clearer in steam’s own applications as the auto scaling stopped gimping the resolution.

If you try it in a sim of your choice you don’t notice any difference in clarity and legibility of small writing? You will need to restart most games for the new steam resolution to take effect btw, so try your 68% and look at the fine details then change to 100% and reboot the game.

To me there is quite a significant difference between 100% and anything below around 80%.

At 100% on the G2 my frame rate tanked. It was between 60 and 70 FPS and frame-time consistency was crap too. (I'm on a 1080Ti) maybe I was distracted by the "unplayableness" of it.

However, I don't think it's a coincedence that two different panels with the same resolution look similar and get similar FPS. The G1 was a "claimed"140% and the the G2 is a "claimed" 68%...

The picture looks similar. The FPS are similar. The amount of actual pixels being renderd by the hardware is most likely similar.

Maybe the G2 at 100% looks like the G1 at 180%. I don't have hardware that can run either scenario at playable frame rates, so I can't really test that yet.

Also, the 140% G1 was on a different Steam VR version. I switched the the beta version while troubleshooting the G2. Maybe the claimed SS % will show a different number when I get my G1 back and run it with this version of Steam VR.

Yeah your 1080Ti won’t be enough for 100% in pretty much anything other than the basic VR games, much like my 2070S wasn’t up to it.

Of course it isn’t a co-incidence. If you are trying to push the same amount of pixels and are even in the same WMR platform it’s obvious the FPS will be much the same... and ultimately they have the same resolution screens so the only difference in visuals will come from the lower screendoor in the G2, slightly better colours/contrast, any difference in lens etc so again not really surprising that they would have similar clarity at similar settings.

Not sure if they will go back and change the G1 settings... they should really but it would mess with everyone’s set up so maybe not the best idea!

Anyway no need to guess what is similar resolution in the slider % between the two headsets since you have both - you can just see what the actual target resolution in steam is for a given headset at a given percentage next to the slider when you set it to manual.

Do you have to run SteamVR? My DCS install is standalone, and while I have Steam for other games would prefer to keep the software running the G2 to a minimum (bear in mind, I haven't even been able to order the G2 yet!)

Hi all, new reverb owner here just got one yesterday from ebay. The Mixed Reality Portal software started, did the pc check, it says i am ok apart from not having Bluetooth (does my pc need Bluetooth - if so, can someone recommend me a suitable solution please as in what to buy?).

Hi all, new reverb owner here just got one yesterday from ebay, it won't turn on. The plug adapter is not uk, it looks euro with the 2 prongs, so i bought this euro to uk plug adapter https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B088LPL4GW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 however its still not turning on. The adapter works ok, i've tested it elsewhere (on a 6A device fwiw).

The adapter is rated at 13A (the fuse is 13A), in the description it says its not suitable for powered items, and i notice the plug from the reverb says 16/250 in tiny writing on it, does this mean its 16A and this is why it's not working? The fuse in the plug adapter is easily accessible, if this is the problem i could easily change it for a higher amp fuse (or is this dangerous?).

Also, I've manually started the "Mixed Reality Portal" software, did the pc check, it says i am ok apart from not having Bluetooth (does my pc need Bluetooth?).

edit to add: not pleased about it not having a UK plug adapter, the ebay ad just stated "UK stock" so i assumed it would be a UK headset with a UK plug. I'm not seeing any 16A adapters in my google searches....maybe that's why he got rid.

The euro plug with an adapter shouldn't cause you any issues really. The plug on my G2 has a 5A fuse, if you want to replace the power cable with a UK one it's called a "C5 Cloverleaf Power Cord" if you wish to search that in the usual places.
Not having Bluetooth isn't an issue for the G2 as the controllers link to the headset itself and not the PC.

Do you have an AMD X570 system? You may be having a USB issue which is a common problem. If you do then try a USB hub to see if it connects.

Hey there thx for the reply, my plug adapter worked fine, it was just the cable going into the g2 wasn't in properly hence my hasty edit of my previous post before i had seen your reply lol. I'm going through the setup now, all good.

Does anyone know when I might be able to buy a g2?
Ebay has them now but you'll pay way over RRP which is what i've just done.

Supply has been pretty slow, just a case of being patient. A couple of sites you can put your email address in to be notified of stock.

They say the end of January.

This is a pain in the boat, it really needs to be clicked right in. If you get a disconnection error, it'll always be that, unclick and reseat.

Unlike the Index there isn't a forward fastening, so the cable hangs free with just the retaining clip on the back. It's prone to unseating the cable because of that.

^ Thx lokiss I will keep my eye on it.

Microsoft flight simulator is fantastic with this vr headset. I've tried the game with a rift s, quest 2, and a reverb. The rift s, it is just a bit poor with the low res, the quest 2 is much better, the reverb is better again although the gulf between the reverb and the quest 2 is not as big as the gulf between the rift s and the quest 2.

The rift s will be on ebay soon, I am keeping quest 2 and reverb. Quest 2 will be for wireless fps like Alyx and Onward, the reverb for msfs 2020 and any other sim. If I had to keep only 1....ooh thats tough....I really like quest 2 but msfs with reverb had me really smiling. I'm lucky to have both.

Haven’t had an issue with it coming loose once fully inserted but I don’t like how it bends when you flip up the headset strap... looks like a future fatigue issue waiting to happen to me!

Could always loop a Velcro tie or something around the headband near the speaker if it’s coming loose.
