*** HP Reverb G2 Owners Thread ***

ICYMI, Windows 11 24H2 drops support for WMR which means the Reverb G2 will no longer work in Windows 11.

Hopefully the community will find a solution, but to be safe you might want to block this update for now. With registry settings you can block this feature update but still obtain security updates. If you would rather not edit the registry you can use the freeware utility InControl from GRC to do this for you.

not supporting a feature is one thing, but disabling it is another, not a good look to disable everyone's headsets

that is a bloody disgrace. its still a perfectly functional vr headset

Just create a 200GB partition on a drive and install windows 10 (or Windows 11 24h2) and your Reverb. You can still access your steam library by pointing the Windows 10 partition to your other drive install location.

Some nerds out there had better make the G2 keep working after this ridiculous decision by Microsoft to nerf mixed reality.

I'm saying this as I got a PSVR2 this week plus the adapter. I think it's a great headset and superb for games like Alyx and dark atmospheric games due to the OLED panels etc etc. However for sims and especially MSFS 2020 where clarity is king, I just can't believe how good the G2 still is! Tried it again today to compare to the PSVR2 and the G2 is so crisp and sharp in comparison - in this particular game - it's ridiculous.

The G2 HAS to carry on, how do we make this happen?

You can feedback to Microsoft via the hub.
In the short term, block the update as I mentioned above.
Longer term, we can only hope someone comes up with some middleware to plug the gap.

Aye. I think I will do the registry trick to block updates a bit nearer the time.
I think the G2 is still such a great, and popular headset that some bright spark will find a way around it to keep it ticking. It deserves to. Very ahead of its time and good value for money this thing.

The Reverb G2 is a decent headset but I don't think you could call it something that was ahead of it's time. It was good value eventually when the price dropped. And I think the problem is the popularity. As in, it wasn't very popular at all. To give you an idea, the Rift S outsold the entire WMR range. In fairness to the G2, that's a problem for the whole of PCVR. The numbers just aren't there. Like The Rift S sales were dwarfed by the Quest 1 sales.

its image quality blew any other (consumer) headset out of the water - at the point of release, others have bettered it now.

it had a few design issues. controller tracking was.......... passable but the one which got me was how wasteful the head gasket was at killing your FOV.

a cheap home made mod however fixed that as well.
it also had audio which - along with the index - was, and probably still is best in class for included sound.

I dont think it is unfair to call it a flawed masterpiece which was ahead of its time in some areas. I have sold mine now, and dont miss it,but only because the quest pro is also a very good pcvr headset. in terms of out and out clarity at the centre of the lens however, i think the G2 beats the quest pro.

i paid under £550 for it on launch day. that was (again for its time) stonking value. i am less happy that HPs UK sales partner gave all my details to hackers but that is another problem all together.

I am not saying the G2 was a bad headset. I am just saying it had nothing that made it stand out. What feature or technology that other headsets didn't have already? Pimax already had released higher resolution headsets. More expensive, yes, but also much higher resolution. The previous Reverb headset also had the same resolution. While the HP Reverb G2 had great clarity but a very small sweet spot. But, for the price, it was one of the best sim headsets out there.

So I am just curious as to what are those areas that you mention where the G2 was ahead of it's time?

i guess it is just semantics, and largely irrelevant now.... however i never personally considered the pimax headsets at that time to be a full commercial release.

maybe since then they got easier to get hold of but back in 2020 they seemed to me to be a very low number run of them, where as the reverb G2 was widely available without waiting months for delivery.... arguably i would say at launch the G2 had the best image quality out of any of the widely available consumer headsets of the time (including the G1 which had image quality issues as well as worse controller tracking)

anyways either way, unless people want to dual boot old versions of windows etc, or there is a hack or MS backtrack, it really will be moot soon if MS follow through and remove all support for the headsets from windows......

My G2 stopped working and I was lucky that it was still under warranty so got my money back. I am going to get the adapter for the psvr2 but have to say the G2 was so comfortable (the most comfortable I have tried) and looked amazing on ams2.

The news about the update is shocking surely it’s not costing Microsoft much in keeping it supported? Mind you their wmd app was flakey so doubt they put much in to anyway.

i loved my G2, it was a verygood headset for the money at the time, however, unless you can get it for peanuts, given the question mark over future support in windows, and the fact that the quest 3 is affordable and is close to the image quality (or possibly the PSVR2 tho i have not tried that myself and it needs an extra adapter)

but over all i would say no, not if it is proper money. personally i would just get a quest 3.

Is this headset still worth buying these days?
PSVR2 with adapter is a better option as its as good if not better visually and has support going forward. I haven't used the quest 3 but have had the quest 2 and the battery made it very heavy and uncomfortable for me but someone else can comment on the quest 3.

The G2 can be a pain to get working thanks to the Microsoft wmd app but if you do get one make sure it is the revised one.

Quest 3 is much more comfortable due to it being much closer to your face.
