***HTC Magic Thread***

Root is the linux equivalent of a Windows administrator account - it gives full access to everything, including a command line shell (like command prompt). You can make advanced changes to the OS and allows you to be able to install any application (whether this is possible or not, depends on how good you are with linux). Some applications require root access and thus this is why it is a good thing.

It's a bad thing because you can break the software on your phone with full access.

That's it in a nutshell.

I cant get vodafone to negotiate the cost of a magic (due to going through 4 nokia 5800's which are turd in terms of build quality.)

I can't afford more than £30 per month, so the question is this.............would you consider a 24 month contract with this phone?

Cheers

If you go through quidco alfie you can get £90 cash back direct with voda at the moment. This would take the £35 a month contract down to £30 over the 18 months, depends if you would be happy to do such a thing?

Tell vodafone about the top deal:

How long you got left on contract? Phone up and choose the option 'thinking of leaving' - tell them you are considering going to O2 for the iPhone and see what they offer.

EDIT: seen above - when did you sign up?

If you are already signed up then you are in a bit more of a pickle. How long have you been in the contract and how did you sign up? eg in store, online etc etc

It's a little compicated really.............been with them about a month (Via Online) so whilst I am over the cooling off period I have been through 4 nokia 5800's with them. Therefore I think the 14 days gets renewed (on the handset at least) every time you exchange. I am now sick of the nokia 5800 as it seems to be built by a drunk person.

I would like vodafone to upgrade me to a magic as a good will gesture. I'm currently paying £30 per month for 600 min, unltd text and 500mb internet.

I cant really think of an alternative handset I would like, yet vodafone will not even reply to my emails and when i phone them up they juist send me around a million departments................no one wants to help.................:(

After three, i really wanted a good experience with vodafone. I'll just have to keep exchaging the nokia 5800 until they give up.

Wish i'd seen that P4U deal before..............don't want 24 month and they will only upgrade me to magic if i extend contract.....................balls!!!!

If anyone has advice that would be great, i want to be part of this community.

It would be worth seeing if they would match a deal which is the same from a competitor and as good will for poor service thus far to swap you a magic. Worth a shot, but they by no means have to give you a more expensive phone on what you have currently got. I would see if you can have a go at customer services about poor service and remuneration etc etc. Never know!

Ha, funny coincidence............woman from vodafone just rang about an email i sent a month ago about getting a parcel tracking number for my first 5800................no response inside a month! couldn't understand a word she was saying.......she put me on hold and then she hung up after 5 mins. grrrrrrrrr. I wonder if anyone who works for vodafone watches this thread?

have just found this:
http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting

full instructions on how to root your magic and flash an updated rom that restores some of the goodies removed on the Vodafone version (voice dialling, the HTC keyboard, predictive text etc).

I am now off to order my Magic. :)

I've got all the files, I've got adb ready in a cmd window with all files in tools dir but I need to know if this will leave my Magic "empty" after I root it? the last few steps says to apply my updates - well I have no updates but I would like to use the screenshot app which requires root to work!

I just need to know if I follow those steps that I can simply reboot and the phone will have root so I can use such apps!
