***HTC Magic Thread***

Right, I just sat there and dealt with it. Everyone is now properly named and has email addresses too :) Only took about twenty minutes - I forget how easy it is to edit contacts with a web interface and a keyboard ala Google Contacts. It updated on the phone in no time as well - thought I might have to hit a synchronize button and wait an hour or something :D

All is good in the kingdom of the magic.

Except *^&%*$(£ Maestro support. But we'll leave that for another day.

Set compression ratio to Extreme! \m/

The only issue now is really that from the phone itself you cannot assign a contact to a group - handy for new contacts, what happens at present is that the number gets saved into "My Contacts" group in Gmail and you have to move it in Gmail to a designated group afterwards. I have various groups like Business, Friends & Fam, Work etc and since all my contacts have mail addresses I just sync them all to the phone so all groups are there.

I read some Google Groups posts about this and hope it's a feature available in Donut!

****

I have tested Contacts saving from the phone directly and found the following:

When saving a new contact (say from a call list) the contact gets saved (after sync) to the first sync group (if you’ve not chosen a sync group then it gets saved in “My Contacts”). In my case the first sync group is “- Business” so my Test contact got syncd to that group. If you only have a single sync group for Android, like "Phone" and put all contacts you want on the phone in there then there's no need to read on I guess :p but if you have multiple sync groups then do carry on!

Now since I have a lot of Gmail contacts this can be a bit tedious filing through on Gmail later if you’ve added several new contacts from the phone so what I have done is created a new group called “- Android Holding”*** so now when I save a new contact from the phone they sync to that group and added the holding group on the phone as a sync group (do this first).

This means basically that I can later go into Gmail and move new contacts from the “- Android Holding” group into Family, Business or whatever and since those groups are set to sync anyway the phone won’t know any different.

This is just an extra process to do for new contacts, an easy one too. At least until Google add the option to add new contacts to a group of your choosing from the phone directly anyway.

***I have used a dash before the group names because this quickly sets them apart form the default groups in Gmail as I don’t use them since you cannot select them for sync in Android.

Indeed, could try that but there are a lot with odd second names and I'm not gonna sit there and do 'em all, I'd be here till Xmas :D
Lazy so and so. :D

*Simon Simonette is a made up name :p
No it isn't. It's your alter ego I reckon. ;)

Ah right. So you can add new contacts and then group them afterwards but not combine adding them and grouping them in one step?

This seems to be the case on Android at present yep, G1 users as well as G2 have reported it on Android community forum with no solid solution yet, come on Google! I'm just about to post my workaround on the Android forum though :D

Those are commonly used applications that you access on and off everyday. I'd want them still running to be honest so they load up a bit quicker when I select them.

Its non phone default applications you need to keep an eye on. Theres a couple I've downloaded from the Market that simply refuse to close automatically.

I've been using Advanced Task Manager for my task killing... Setting the netcounter and messaging apps on "exclude", so kill all doesn't end them, I've been quitting things as I use them.

I've been using the phone in 2G mode (fine for everyday phonecalls), and using wifi to browse the net on and off today, together with sending a good few dozen texts, and generally playing with a few features, and after a days use, the battery's only down to 75% - not bad.

Seems if you're sensible and manage your tasks properly - end processor hungry tasks like the browser when you're done, switch the wifi on and off when you're using and not using it, and stick to 2G unless browsing the net outside of wifi, then the battery stands up pretty well.

The updates are named after foody things. ;)

And there are three updates left in the year. The next we know to be Donut. So I just wondered if the last one for the year would be on December 25th. You know, Christmas? :p

Ah. :) I have seriously got to get me one of these. Even though I'd probably not use it as a phone much. :p

Suppose I could use it at work. Have had problems phoning people up about the school server and actually needing to be at the server to tell them stuff. Which is a bit difficult when the nearest phone I can use is in the school office. Which isn't near enough the server room for the phone cable to reach. :(

That and I'm sure there are a few apps out there that could help me in my work. :) Like games to play at lunch time. :D

I'll wait for Donut to come out, which should be soon, to see what that does for Android but the Magic in particular. I'd also quite like to wait until Vodafone's exclusivity deal on the Magic ends to see if any other networks pick it up and offer some better deals than Vodafone. I reckon it is unlikely though. Any thoughts? Will any other networks take the Magic on and provide Vodafone some competition or are all the networks setting out their pitches with the phones they have currently? I don't see any point in getting the Magic sim free for £300 or so and then still have to pay £25 to £30 a month to a network.

With many new Android handsets due to come out by Xmas and especially ones that are cheaper and "youthier" like the Motorolla one I would expect the prices to all drop as competition between brands and networks heats up based on who gets what handset on their networks.

I still have yet to see an Android handset that looks prettier than the Magic though, the Sony Ericsson concept photos look amazing though but that's not even 100% confirmed yet so here's hoping!

When you say prices do you mean the actual cost of the handset or the monthly tariff? If all the monthly tariffs I'm looking at provide the Magic for free will the end of Vodafone's exclusivity with the Magic actually benefit in any way?

And by the Sony Ericsson do you mean the Xperia X3?
