** HTC VIVE PRO - UPGRADED WIRELESS VR HEADSET ANNOUNCED **

some of the £800 price must be related to the dual 1.0 and 2.0 tracking capability.

future headsets might be cheaper if 1.0 is dropped.

I'm sure HTC will reveal a bundle at £999 that's my opinion. More than I expected to pay but there's a premium for the latest and greatest all the time.

That's a big change of opinion for someone who complained that the original Vive and Rift were too expensive. Now you are happy paying a higher price for a smaller jump in VR technology.

The worst thing about this bonkers price is that it doesn't end there.

If you want the best experience you are going to have to fork out for the knuckles, and then for the wireless add-on.

Its a joke. Even funnier is claiming it's for 'business users'... So why not build a 4k hmd? People using this to look at cars are people in Jaguar Land Rover who can throw money at computing horsepower to make it work.

That's true, but the prices are not going to get better. I'm not happy paying it, but there doesn't seem much of a choice. Do I buy when there is a bundle or ride it out till the price drops? I could be waiting forever

I would buy when there is enough decent media to warrant the crazy prices. Imo this is not the time and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

I would say buy a Rift or Vive and wait for a true next gen headset. The difference in resolution isn't worth the huge outlay and neither are the new lighthouses unless you plan to play in 10x10m space.

Been talking it over and I think we'll settle on the standard vive. Should be good deals I reckon.

The difference between the first and second iteration is the inclusion of an ID within the signal. There is no way to update the firmware of the initial sensors, hence they are now considered legacy devices. On the upside, the second version of the lighthouse is cheaper to produce. The downside though is that you still need to attach trackers to anything that you want tracked meaning even with this new revision, it is still very much a gen 1 tracking solution.

OCUK are doing a demo of the Vive Pro soon. If you have a chance maybe you should check it out. You can decide then if the higher resolution is worth the extra price. I am presuming that you have tried the original Vive.

Not yet only, mobile and PSVR.

Were you happy with the Picture quality? For some people, myself included, the immersion factor makes you forget about the graphics quality, which is also why I prefer the touch controllers over the Vive wands. They increase the feeling of actually been there.

If you can at all, you should test both the Rift and Vive.

I highly recomend you try both the Rift and Vive before you buy one over the other, they both other incredible experiences, yet there are differences that are worth thinking about. Obviously it’s all subjective, but here’s my own quick break down.

Vive
+ perfect out of the box tracking
+ only requires two sensors
+ sensors plug into mains sockets
+ minimal wire mess
+ some titles are for Vive only (LA Noire)
- requires the user to use a headset, or splash out on the deluxe audio strap at an an extra £99
- more expensive than the Rift
- Vive wands, in my opinion are awful
- Vive knuckle controllers when they come out will add to the cost
- requires an additional fix to play Oculus developed titles
- heavier than the Rift

Rift
+ cheaper than the Vive
+ Oculus Home is WAY better than SteamVR, in my opinion of course
+ the ability to ‘pin’ a window and watch Netflix, watch stocks, TV etc in Oculus Dash whilst playing a game is brilliant
+ Oculus funded games are amongst the best VR titles around
+ Touch controllers are the best VR controllers by far
+ in built audio and mic, are very quality
+ headset feels comfortable, and light
- requires an additional 3rd (or 4th..) sensor for room scale
- very fussy about usbs, may require a pcie usb adapter
- needs usb extenders, resulting in mess
- some steam games require 3rd party fixes, due to not being optimised for the touch controls
- there have been SteamVR titles that out right lock Rift users out

These are my own pro and cons on both, I bought both and returned the Vive after using them both for a 5 hours each, the main selling points of the Rift for me was the in built audio and mic, the comfort, oculus’s own games (playable on the Vive through revive) and most of all the Touch Controllers.

Since then Oculus has the Oculus home 2.0 beta which is a joy to use, though I still like SteamVR.

Both are great, and you will be happy with either.

Enjoy!

Thanks so much for this reply. I'll try and get to try out both and see how it goes.
