HTC Vive

Quick question guys.

Really tempted to order a Vive but I am slightly concerned about my PC's "grunt".

I have a i7 4770s (3.9Ghz) coupled with a GK110 Titan (so roughly 970 (+/- 5%) performance give or take). Is this enough for a "decent" Vive experience or do I really need something like a 980Ti / 1070 minimum?

Also HDMI wise I assume the 1.4a port on the Titan is acceptable (i.e. Doesn't need HDMI 2.0)?

Finally I need to wear glasses to see, I know you can run the headset over glasses but does anyone actually do this?

I will need to measure up the planned space first but from memory I have at least 2x1.5m free in my living room.

:)

firstly try to run ' Steam VR performance test ' on Steam

http://store.steampowered.com/app/323910/

it will give you roughly idea how well it will run.

- yes Vive only need HDMI 1.4
- Vive can adjust the distance between your eyes with lens give more space for your glasses (The Vive also comes with a smaller face pad that you can switch to that gives you a bit more space for glasses.)
- 2X1.5m is just about enough to play most games.

I think you'll be okay. Try the Steam VR Performance Test which will give you a good idea. You can use the Vive seated or standing and not use the Room Space feature (might limit you on some games though)

Thanks guys :)

Just visualised the room and I definitely have the 2x1.5m space required as a minimum (I actually have a little more room than that).

I will give the SteamVR performance test later.

You should be fine.

I am currently running I5 2500K at 3.6ghz and an EVGA 770 SC, the vive runs most games fine even Pcars, Elite dangerous and now Dirt Rally, it is a bit limited by its 2Gb memory I think as I get the display flickering in The Lab and that Disney thing after been on a while. My brother running virtually same but 4Gb 770 does get no flickers.

My new system is still awaiting a Strix OC 1080 so god knows when that will turn up.

Just ran the performance test with my Titan running at ~1100/6600 and scored 5.6. Apparently good enough for medium settings although it recommends an upgrade to get the best experience.

Looks like I should be good to go. :)

I love you man!!

Boom first time running as admin and straight into VR..

Wow, I had the rift DK2, but this is 100 times way more immersive.

Tried the blu and the lab.. Need to buy brookhaven now!

Woop! So glad it worked for you. Such a good feeling when it all suddenly starts working as it should. Definitely get Brookhaven, tried it for the first time today, OMG it's scary than it looks on videos! You really have to aim like you would in real life to pop those headshots!

Also, make sure you set Steam to run as admin automatically and you shouldn't have to remember to do it again.

Also added 1.4 of Supersampling today (didn't want to go too high as I want every game to run smooth and not have to change it each time) to see what the fuss is about. WOW, can't believe how much clearer and sharper everything is. Well worth doing!

I don't think anything in the medium range is going to give a great experience to be honest. I'd have a go at overclocking the card and see what score you can get.

Ok all setup fine, really quite enjoyed my first 30mins, then after 45mins of just playing The Lab games I had to turn it off, the sickness was overwhelming to the point of cold sweats and consideration over whether I should move to the toilet area. Felt like post Migraine (proper migraine with loss of vision not just a headache). Getting some fresh area and a tip to the co-op didn't help I felt like I was still in VR. The sickness nearly went off a couple of hours later so I went back on for 20mins and I'm sat here feeling the effects still typing this.
Will this get better? I felt like I'd done a 5 hour session on BF when I hadn't played in ages, but this came on within 45mins. I know I've been out of gaming for a month with nothing to play.
If this continues after the 3/4th try it's going to have to go back. I feel rotten atm.

hahahaha yep sounds about right. I had a similar experience to yours. I could only last about 20 mins though. You'll get used to it, you just need to build up some VR stamina over time.

I can keep it on as long as I want now. You just need to get used to it. I built it up pretty quickly around 2 weeks.

This VR stuff is truly insane though, it feels like your there, in a new world. I took the headset off and the wife's sat there and I was like "oh". Swear if I got myself a VR Lambo and VR Valentina Nappi I'd never take it off. I feel like I'm living Avatar.

I think most people get used to it pretty quickly.

I was ok on the experience type and Job Simulator etc.

The first time I tried Pcars and Assetto Corsa, I did half a lap and had to stop, that was on my brothers. Next time I tried them was on my own, not sure if it was different seating position but did a few laps, felt a bit off for an hour or so afterwards.

After a couple more sessions I do not notice it at all, only micro stomach twinge when you come to a stop under brakes and it is the last second dip of the nose.

Can even manage Windlands, the jumping and swinging around is notorious for giving the wobbles and motion sickness, the bending of knees slightly on takeoff and landing is of massive benefit on that one.

lol ok, are you fine with it now? How long can you play?

Remember that everyone is differnet, some people will not be affected at all whereas others will feel terrible. You may get used to it.

Thank fully Ive not had any nausea at all in the several hours ive been playing in it, which was totally different from when I played Dreadhalls on the gear VR, 5 mins in and I felt terrible which lasted for a few hours. Even the thought of playing that again makes me feel queasy, thankfully now that I have the vive I can get rid of my Gear vr.

Going to tackle it again later though I can still feel the strain behind my eye sockets this morning, maybe I need to turn the brightness down a bit. The thought of going back on isn't great after yesterdays sickness till bed.

Been so busy at the moment, not had a chance to play my Vive for over a month... but jumped back in last night and still very glad I bought it. Rec room was neat, and thankfully everyone kept it SFW as well haha.

It's also cool to know that there have been a bunch of updates to games and I am genuinely interested in checking all of them out. The magic of VR!

But we are starting to see better looking games now and the urge to supersample is getting stronger... my poor 970. It felt so fast when I first bought it haha.
