HTC Vive

Probably been asked a ton load of times, but...

I'm about to purchase the HTC Vive and I'm wondering if theres any additional bit of kit required?

Lead extensions, possible wall mounting solution for the pods etc

Any info is appreciated
Everything you need comes included in the box. However, it's useful to do some planning beforehand since a bad setup will cause issues. I bought:

* a pair of floor-to-ceiling extending prop stands (about £14 each)
* a pair of camera clamp mounts (£5-10 each)
* a 3m USB A to USB A cable (£8)
* a 3m HDMI cable (£10 for a 2-pack...just in case)
* a 6-way multiplug adaptor (I needed more plugs under my desk...)

The prop stands and clamps are handy to quickly and painlessly mount the Lighthouses without resorting to drilling. Plus it's adjustable and movable in future. They'll each need a power point close by. Since mine are quite far apart and partially obscured by a ceiling light I also link them together with the 15m sync cable (included) which reduces the jitter.

The USB and HDMI cables I use to place the included link box on the opposite end of my desk closest to my play area. They provide 1m cables in the box, but I like to keep my desk devoid of unnecessary cable clutter and have the link box draped across it ask the time. The link box is attached on the underside of my desk using the provided double-sided patch, but that didn't last long, so used something more sturdy like removable no-more-nails strips to keep it in place.

Some other advice since I had some false starts with these: don't use DisplayPort, at least not with the latest nVidia cards. Stick to HDMI between the GPU and the link box. Also use a USB 2.0 port on your motherboard to connect the link box and shift as much as possible everything else to USB 3.

Cheers for info mate! That's an idea for mounting the link box, i have mine in the same location so if it falls I'll probably do the same.

I got mine setup yesterday afternoon, lucky enough I had sockets where I wanted to wall mount the pods.

Totally blown away, although you can tell the screen tech has a few years of work ahead but all in all its still very impressive. I couldn't stop laughing during the Vive setup with the balloons, also spent hours playing The Lab lol

I have yet to recieve the free game codes though, anyone know how long they take to get to you?

In the mean time I've bought Vanishing Realms :)

My game codes arrived a few hours after my despatch email for the Vive. Give CS a call.

I didn't order direct from HTC unfortunately, might try them though.

On another note Vanishing Realms is awesome.

ah nice, cheers ill get on the phone on monday :)

Just noticed i have firmware updates for the controllers and the headset, kinda loath to update as its working perfectly at the moment lol

Any firmware release notes to see what it changes/fixes?

Just went ahead and updated :)

Completed Vanishing Realms, for my first VR game i was really impressed although it did look like they rushed to finish the 3rd act.

Have you owner's had any trouble with your Vive? Friend of mine has had the lighthouse crap out, and they'd said sorry there's no warranty, you'll have to pay to get it fixed!

Of course there is a warranty, something isn't right

If its not been damaged then they will replace it

I had an issue with the power to a base station, but they replaced it

I was surprised, he's a pretty successful game developer and streamer. Had to pay to ship the lighthouse units back to them, and now they're flat out said there's no warranty and he'll have to pay for the repair....amazed.

Just received my 6mm replacement face padding for my vive, first impressions are positive there well made, pretty comfortable even though there 6mm thick, they dont absorb sweat being made of pu leather, fov is increased because the lenses are closer to your eyes(which is why I bought the 6mm ones) so overall if your looking for a new set of inserts these come recommended.

Hey mate, I'm interested in thisso just a couple of questions!
Did you get both the wide and narrow fit face covers at 6mm?
Also was there additional costs involved?

Cheers

The two you get are the same size i would say they are the wide ones. No extra cost involved they ship from vietnam.

I used the narrow face standard foam previously as the wide seemed to press heavily on bridge of nose. I got the 18mm vrcover replacements and they are much more comfortable on my face. Shipping was a flat $7 and there was no customs fee (came via Deutsche Post Mail).

With the original foam did you ever notice the Fresnel rings when there was a black background with just one or two light sources? and if so did these pad fix it.

Thanks

Guys, regarding the foam inserts. I'm using the default fitted one right now.
My god is gets wet with sweat easily in my air conditioned room. Can't imagine having a pvc one that won't wick up sweat....eeuughgh.
Anyway, is the slimmer one purely for, what short-sighted people? Or the default is for glasses wearer and maybe i should be using the slimmer one as i don't wear glasses?
Also, considering the rig in my sig, what would you suggest setting the TargetRenderMultiplier at to get the best quality. Currently set at 1.5 (i think).

Thanks :)
