HTC Vive

I had the vive which I returned as found it too clunky to wear and thinking of getting the rift now but tbh on all forums VR seems to have gone cool now....I'm worried I'm buying into a fad like 3D which is ultimately gonna die off....

this article doesnt encourage me nor do the lack of posts on this thread recently....

maybe I will look at PSVR.......would be a bit of a waste of my 1080gtx based gaming rig though :)

are you guys still using your VR headsets a lot or is it something only occasionally used now to impress friends & family?

I think the problem is that the Vive arrived almost as a surprise in developer's laps with full room tracking capability when everyone at the time was looking at mainly seated experiences for the Rift and Project Morpheus. So yes, the Rift and PSVR would have a more mature and polished lineup.

The challenge for developers is trying to find something unique to do with the Vive's capabilities, and that's what we're seeing at the moment (although I'm finding they mainly seem to be limited to shooting gallery affairs, but there are definitely a few gems out there).

Personally I'd rather have early access titles to play right now than having to wait another 12-18 months for complete titles.

totally Agree but some of these early access gamesare the same price as full priced ones and most of them never get finished

Love the Vive and VR in general its awesome .. ive just run out of stuff to play or find anything that makes getting it setup worthwhile for more then a couple of mins

I'm still enjoying the Vive experience, but sadly don't get too much time to play at the moment!

Agree on the pricing though - some early access games are much too expensive for what they offer. :(

...is the slimmer one purely for, what short-sighted people? Or the default is for glasses wearer and maybe i should be using the slimmer one as i don't wear glasses?..

I can answer that question for you mate.

The thinner the foam the closer your eyes are to the fresnel lenses, this increases your field of view and more of the screen is in correct focus. It really helps when you're using programs like Virtual Desktop and you can read text almost to the far corners of the screen, but you'll notice in games the lines are also far sharper.

I use the specific sleep mask mod detailed on reddit and the material soaks up sweat and allows you to cut it into shape. Highly recommend it for it being so cheap and the only negative is that the headset isn't as glued to your face.

I went to Thorpe Park the other day and went on Derren Browns Ghost Train.

It uses HTC Vive Headsets for the VR section, and I'm so glad I didn't jump on to Gen #1 VR now as the screen-door effect was still very apparent (I previously used DK2) and (without spoiling it) there is a section which looked like a computer game from 6 years ago which didn't look good at all.

Anyone else been?

Not been Thorpe Park for a couple of years now. Last I went I over did the rides, especially that old roller coaster that has been there from the mid nineties (colossus I think) that makes you go round and round many times. That was the last ride of the day for me and I felt sick after. Lost my equilibrium and took me nearly a year to recover. Lol.

I think I will definitely be waiting on second gen vr from all the things I have read. By then an improved vive will hopefully be closer to £500 too.

Off topic: Colossus didn't open until 2002 and is still really good.

But the Ghost Train was massively disappointing as I usually like Derren Browns shows. I guess the constraints of getting people quickly through a Theme park ride in large enough numbers is the biggest issue and he didn't really overcome it.

My bad, from the top of my head it felt like a nineties ride. It looks really old too. Never had a problem with it until that day. Now I will never go on it again. I felt newer rides like the saw or stealth are just as fun but easier on the body. But obviously everyone has a different limit. I was fine until that day going on anything. Months after that ride I would use a elevator and feel a little dizzy as it would descend.

I am looking forward to trying some of the new VR rides though, i may go Alton towers in year or two. Not been there for over 10 years now and I heard they got a good VR ride there.

Close one today boys and girls.

Set my vive up in the lounge first time in about 6weeks.

Left it in the plastic bag atop my PC. Rear was facing window.

Girlfriend opened curtains sun shining right in. Luckily no damage, as I had the wipe cloth inside the unit , but some of the lenses was exposed.

Plugged it in and walked around a bit..all seems OK.

Nice stuff. My eyesight isn't great and I wear contacts

This is slightly embarrassing - does anyone have a lazy eye that uses the Vive? Or what do people with -X eyesight do and how do you find the Vive?

Is there a way to test before you buy?

The vive focal point is about 75cm, so about 3-4 inches longer than the average male arm. If you can hold out a piece of paper and are able to see it okay (low amounts of bluriness) at that distance you probably dont need your glasses for the Vive. This fits in with some people have been posting here; those with weaker presciptions for nearsightedness don't need their glasses.
