HTC Vive

Just reporting in after a whole evening on the Vive which arrived from OcUK today.

Wow its immense, well worth the entry cost and better than I had imagined, you just can't explain what it is like, has to be seen to be believed!

For lighthouse mounting I just hammer one pin from a picture hanging kit in to the wall and hooked the mount on to that and its plenty secure and stable enough with minimal effort and lasting effect on the walls.

Set up was a doddle took about an hour from unboxing to tutorial with headsetnon, taking my time. Pleased that our play area has been plenty big enough so far for the lab, Brookhaven, job sim and fantastic contraption. I measured out 2.7x2.5m max but not quite square so in the set up ended up with a 2.5x2m box.

After 3 of us on it for a few hours the only complaint we have is getting the position on your head right so its all in focus, as well as getting it fully secured. Its been fine but I think it will just take some getting used to to get the straps in the right place and used to how it sits. It wasn't really distracting just required a little adjustment now and then.

Overall 9.5/10 roll on the weekend!

Good to hear! Finally got my mounts sorted around 10pm, 2 hours 30 of troubleshooting followed ending only in seeing part of the tutorial without the hmd displays on! The woes of a card with no hdmi socket I imagine!

Best way to get it in the right place is to loosen the 3 cables (and headphone) on the top of the headset so they stick out then put it on and pull the back of the straps as far down the back of your head as you can comfortably. Just under the occipital bone is great. Then when you have this in place, tilt the headset itself as if the bottom is tilting away and the top ridge towards your face more. A lot of people say to rest it on your cheek bones so you could try that, but that didn't work for me.

Have fun mate :)

Well f'd the mounting up quite dramatically, did the holes, stuck the plugs in and turns out the plugs all have solid sections that I can't screw through pushing them back into the wall and no other screws I can use!

3 of 4 of mine were like this.

1 dropped behind the plaster board as I was pushing hard to catch threading. Ended up replacing that one with another raw plug and screw.

Used 1 rawlplug on each at top and then simple raw plugs at the bottom. They ain't going anywhere. To be fair I use my lounge and treat it as an occasional bit of fun. Can't be bothered with seated, which would mean moving it to my office.

Im a bit underwhelmed unfortunately - but i need to set up my sensors properly - i find that i can see the haloing of the lenses and in desktop mode its pretty impossible to read texts on normal folder sizes or whatever. Watching a movie is immersive but its reduced by the quality of the video - i stuck on Star Wars bluray and while its watchable its certainly not yet at a level where id sit and watch a full film due to seeing the pixels.

On the other hand, after buying the Apollo VR - returning to earth and turning to see a full sized person next to you is incredible - so its a very mixed bag for me as yet, I may return it under DSR.

2 days in still not managed to get it going, found out that it got stuck with direct mode disabled, had to go into a config file to get my little led green.

then found out that none of my various hdmi/mini dp/dvi adapters were capable so while the games were running the vive was dark! (no hdmi socket on my card for some reason)

alas, grabbing a new adapter tomorrow and also got a 1070 on the way that i will use if the adapter doesn't work

Got mine set up after the faff with downloading software.

Only to find one of my Base Stations is Duff, it will not stabilize permanent Blue light and an odd clicking sound for 3 seconds then quite for 5 secs and repeat.
Tried different channels, different power supply, different location all same.

Tried one of my brothers base stations and it worked fine so at least got to test the HMD which works fine.

Will get in touch with OC tomorrow and have a look around Web for suggestions, likely RMA I imagine.

RMA's with HTC sound like a bit of a nightmare, as it is DOA i would return it to OC for a refund and order another, you will get a quicker turnaround than trying to send anything off for repair

Internet sentiment says it is. My impression was it was one of my best RMA experiences. Irrespective I agree, DOA so return for refund and buy a new one.

Can someone point me to what cables I would need to extend this into the room next door? I guess a usb extender and hdmi one too? 4-5 meters should do it.

I've been using these recently including a TV mount & two monitors, 1 on an Ergotron wall mounted arm. Though I used a spreader plate with 6 plugs with that.

Update to my Duff Base Station ie permanent Blue Status light and clicking noise.

Have spoke with OC support, explained issue, whole kit being picked up Monday for replacement by them after a quick check.

Hope to get replacement next week, hope HMD is as good as this one, no dead or stuck pixels.

ended up just going with the normal plasterboard plugs i had and a random screw set I picked up from Ikea some years back, bit of trouble from the misses for having silver screws instead of black, but i'll survive!

finally figured out that I just needed a better adapter to get the HMD working, a quick nip down the road to the "barcode" site and a nice 4k capable mini dp to hdmi adapter has given me connection!

6 hours later and im stuck on the couch in agony from too much archery / light saber swinging!
