huddersfield uni (game design) and ucas Q's in general

Games Design is very similar to 3D modelling and such, the course in Stafford Uni is based around Maya etc...

Yup, Staffs is my top choice atm, close to my life (family, girlfriend) and the course/people/place seem amazing :) I've got an interview bagged there so all's hoping.
In all honesty its the only uni i've really geared up. The others were just choices I picked that did the course similar (as few seem to offer a decent course in the field) and as backups.

@ Locrian, Thankyou.

@ ninja economist, If you are slagging huddersfield for a reason, TELL ME. It is what i originally asked for, whats the place like etc? If you seem so quick to judge it you obviously know some info on the place?

@ Conanius, quote.. (cba too) Theres lots to be said for doing a job you love, certainly prefer to earn 30k doing a job I love than 130k doing one I hate....

Bingo. :)

Nokkon, I'm neither. I hate programming, and Teeside want a hand drawn portfolio with NO computer work. (they said if not, they would enroll me for a different course, where I would be able to choise modules from game design anyway)
I can draw, but only on the offchance do something "good". I dropped as level art becuase, it was boring meaningless, had no life to it. Computer art, I can do. And games design /3d modelling etc is what i asked my college if they did when i joined.

Right sod this. I am reminded once again why OcUK has gone to the dogs. A bunch of idiots chatting rubbish about something they dont even understand. A microculture of retarded idiots with no real understanding of the world. Trolls, keyboard warriors and prejudiced jerks

Thanks OcUK, its been a good 2 years but my time here is done.

I like the way your all having a go at ninja economist, who's probably speaking the most sense out of you all. No need to throw your toys out the pram guys.

Basically, Computer Science or Software Engineering degrees will give you FAR more options when you leave university. Studying Games Programming/Design is limiting you so much. How many students do you think there are on those courses in the country, or even the world? There's probably 100 combined in Staffordshire University, alone.
Then when you take into account the number of computer games companies, lets have a stab at 50-100? Proportionally there's little chance of getting a job at the end of it all. Whereas if you do a broader subject, for example Software Engineering, 3D Modelling etc then you can always fall back on other areas, have a broader knowledge of the computing industry and generally be a more rounded graduate.

But hey, just my opinion :)

Oh and 30k a year out of University? Wake up mate

That one year of Computer Science obviously taught you good role playing skills.

The internet isn't a room, fiend.

erk...

I went to staffs, for erm 3 weeks...

I was doing Mobile Computing (first year it was run iirc) in 2002, back then it was pretty dam appauling. Im sure things have got better, but wow, it was really, really bad.

Granted, I probably should have given it more of a chance, but I absolutely hated it.

Best thing I ever did was leaving there, but it might be good for you... be interested to know how its changed :)

With respect, you appear to be the one with the warped view of the real world. Just because your university tells you on the open day that you'll start on 30k, doesn't necessarily make it true. Some occasionally do start on big money but that's not down to the degree, it's because they either have contacts or are right for the position.

Don't sound so sure of yourself unless you have a job secured. Good luck with it.

to be totally honest, your the main reason I love OCUK, it'll be a shame if you leave :(

If you think i'm trolling, then you should definitely leave.

The fact you have to resort to name calling and a tantrum speaks volumes.

The staffs game design course is pure 3dmodelling/animation and a bit of level design, and such like is the one at huddersfield. Both can cranch out (with a good portfolio) into 3d animation/film work...

It isn't just limited in that sense then? :/

edits, gah im tired!

and you for quoting it. Clever people.

Well, ibtl I spose.

Thanks to anyone who actually tried to help and not ruin the thread..

It was only 2 simple questions guys.

I said nothing about the Univ. what I said was about the course. If you enjoy it, right. That's great. But you're spending all that money as an investment for YOUR FUTURE. You WANT to get a job with your degree, and thus you want the best possible chance for a job with that degree.

You're obviously skilled, and that can go far without a specialist degree. Realistically, and I know that anyone else on this forum with a CS degree will agree with it - A broad background in computing will take you far, and the CS degree is the only ICT degree worth it's salt. Anything else is a dime a dozen.

You want to make yourself more employable, it's that simple.

Its a pleasing way to go getting to say that to a pre-pubescent ****** with no life, no friends, no hope in life other than to troll on the internet

Oh, the irony!

I know people who study medicine at oxford. They have no life, no friends and dont find any real time for a social life.

I spend my days doing something i enjoy, with a girl i love and i couldnt be happier.

You made a comment about huddersfield in relation to a grammer nazi/whatever earlier. I was just picking up on that...

Anyway, I simply don't care for a CS degree. Programming, I failed my AS year. I'm on track to fail my a2 year now. I just, dont click with it. Programming has finally just clicked in a broadened ICT gce course, which computing couldn't teach me.

The only "wider" options i have for game design (which as i said allows itself to be broadened later) is an art degree (nono) or a "multimedia" degree, which any 14 yr old in high school kid seems to be able to do just as easily.

I have no life, I just come on my internet to tell people that they should spend their money on a real degree.

I also don't insult people to the point of getting banned. I just preach tough love.

Tough. Realistic. Love.
