Hungarian Grand Prix 2013, Budapest - Race 10/19

Once again they are penalising the driver for something the team did. Surely something like the team losing the revenue from that race or 50% of the years revenue would be more of a deterrent, and wouldn't punish the driver? That money could then be donated to some racing charity.

Losing constructors points.

The view has always been taken that the driver is part of the team though. Team penalties have nearly always been felt by the driver too.

I can't see pit-stop times increasing at all, or teams being any more careful. Cars being released with loose wheels are rare enough for teams to carry on pushing the boundaries. Perhaps they'll invest more time in preventing cars being released prematurely (nothing stopping the teams adding their own sensors) as that is both their responsibility and in their own best interests, as a car sent out with a loose wheel either ends their race (Button at Silverstone last year) or wrecks it (Webber at the Nurburgring).

Formula 1 teams face 10-place grid drop for dangerous pit stops .

I read somewhere of the suggestion to reduce the number of mechanics allowed to work on the car during a pit stop. The idea being that it would slow pit stops down.

Seems plausible?

Yes, the stops would be slower, but would they take longer fitting each wheel to ensure they were on correctly?

I doubt it. They'll rush through it as quickly as possible so the time lost in the pits is minimised.

A new rule which says "all pit stops must be no shorter then 5 seconds"?

Gary Anderson mentioned something. In the refueling days there was a tab inside the wheel nut that the mechanic had to pull out before they were deemed to have finished, and the tab wouldn't come out unless the nut was on properly.

The teams removed them when refueling went, presumably to save the .5 seconds it takes. Why not mandate this in the rules? The technology already exists.

They could limit it to 2 people like Le Mans, but have it as 1 to do the work, and the other to follow him to make sure it is done correctly. :D

I think they just need to find a punishment that vastly outweighs the gains from cutting corners during the stop. Maybe reset the constructors points to zero :p

I think that would only work if the "tab" was linked to the traffic light system, or to the gearbox, and only when the tab is pulled will the driver be able to move.
Otherwise, you may still get drivers being released with the tabs still in place, purely because the light man didn't notice he hadn't removed it.

Hang on, I'm assuming this is going to be in addition to the new penalty points system coming in next year? So an unsafe release gets you a 10 place grid penalty AND 2 points on the drivers licence.

So a mechanic making an error could see a driver banned for the next race, and starting the race after that with a 10 place grid penalty and at least 5 points on his licence!

I'm really not looking forward to the backlash when the WDC is lost due to a dodgy wheel gun and stupid rules.

Seems entirely possible to link it all together to me. Theres real time telemetry from the cars, just have a sensor in each wheel that detects the tab being pulled or not. If it isn't don't engage a gear. Or at the least don't trigger the green light for the lolly pop man.

What's the reasoning behind having Rodolfo Gonzalez out instead of Max Chilton? You'd think Max would need all the practise he could get...

Which part of that reply makes him an ass exactly? From that quote alone I take him saying, despite being good at 18 he wasn't ready for it (physically, mentally, maturity) and I'm taking it as him implying that would be the same for anyone at 18, its not about if you're fast enough, but if you can handle it.

Again what about that makes him an ass, people often ask questions in general but you can ONLY answer them based on your own experience, you have no other reference point.

Can't see were he made an ass of himself. More like you did by posting it ;)

Perhaps just reading the words you don't get the full effect. i watched it on tv and to me it seemed like he had a smirk on his face as he said it. Came across as quite arrogant for me.

I think that Button knows that everyone extracts the urine about him and his 'issues'

"Do you want talk about the car balance on the radio or not?"

:D

It's a 10 place penalty for leaving the pits with a loose wheel, not a blanket 10 place drop for any unsafe release. Leaving the pits without all wheels on is really not all that common so I doubt you are going to see much penalties to cause you any backlash for stupid rules.

I watched it nothing wrong. I think you are looking to deep and trying to find faults with Lewis and you got a false positive ;)

Red Bull walk over then, cheers Pirelli :)

Does look like Red Bulls race to lose.

I think so to. The rb car looked the only stable car on the track.
