I despair sometimes

I find it disturbing how many people in this topic would let their relatives pay money to be manipulated and lied to...

The operative word being "let".

I don't "let" my relatives do anything. I'm not in charge of what they do. I may (and do) scoff at some of the things they spend their money on, but it's no worse than being an adult and spending money on GTA V, or alcohol or any number of relatively stupid wastes of time.

Being fooled by a scam-artist psychic in order to speak to a dead relative is not the same as buying a video game or a beer. Don't be silly.

I'm not suggesting that people should tie their friends and family down to stop them from going to a psychic, but I certainly wouldn't encourage or support someone to be scammed in this way. What kind of person would that make me?

I didn't say it was the same Einstein. I said that it's no worse.

Oh come on, it's much worse. One is a vicious scam playing on the emotions of people who probably need grief counselling instead of a "psychic", one isn't.

One is an extremely dangerous and addictive substance that is responsible for 4% of deaths globally, tears apart lives and makes people into complete idiots, one isn't. I'm talking about booze here btw, GTA V just makes people into complete idiots. For the record, I drink and play video games, but they are, when you get right down to it, a total waste of time and money.

You're just arguing for the sake of it now. If one's maiden aunt wishes to go see a clairvoyant that's her business. Don't be so self-righteous.

I can't say I particularly agree with either (I'm neither psychic nor religious, for the record), but I don't think there's a special place reserved in hell for religious believers who try and live a good life in service of their Lord; whereas there definitely is for scamming *******s who trick people out of money by playing on their emotions.

As you say - your mileage may vary ;)

I suppose there's a range in every case. You only need look to multi-millionaire televangelists to see the same kind of exploitation for financial gain in religion.

True that, no argument there!

I don't care about your opinion on alcohol and video games, to be perfectly honest. If you like them or not, makes absolutely no difference whatsoever to the topic.

I thought that was pretty much the point of internet discussion forums...?

While I'm at it, I'll also encourage her to send all her bank details to a Nigerian prince with money to liquidate, shall I? It's her business after all.

I used to think this sort of thing was a load of steaming carp, however my girlfriends family are proper into it. Obviously this meant I got dragged along a few times to some, one of which got me thinking when one of them came to her dad and knew far too much about him that was too specific and can't be found out online as he has no online presence.

This wasn't someone trying to make a few quid either as it was a Charity thing and the "Psychic's" were only being paid fuel money & given some free grub.

I now don't know what to think.

Well, you've started arguing line by line, can't compete with that level of tedium. You win.

When you say "specific"... what kind of stuff? His favourite colour or his national insurance number?

The bit that caught my attention was that he was being told that there was a problem with the new fencing that they had erected weeks before & he was asked if he'd had a run in with any gypsies. There was nothing wrong with the fencing & he took it that it was a reference to him living next to a caravan storage facility.

Three days later I get a phone call to say six of the horses are loose can I go help catch them, turns out some ****** had nicked a 28 feet section of 6 foot tall wire fencing which must have took some time as it will have had to be cut into sections and carried across 2 fields plus the fact that the cuts at the bottom were rusty. Looked to me like most of the links were cut way before & just enough left in to hold it all in place until they could come back for it, cut it all down in 10 minutes & be off with it.

Too much co-incidence, and this wasn't one of those stage things where they sit & shout "I've got a bloke called dave, anyone know dave?"

But yes I will still agree that most of these people are con artists, this guy did it as a hobby & worked a normal job.
