i just got dead space 2 but i'm so disappointed

Certainly. :) I messaged Bethesda and Take 2 from the contact page on their websites. I have been presenting it as either putting in place fully customisable keys in games, or at the very least we should be able to look on the back of a game wallet and have information (like when we look for game recommended specs) telling us if the game allows full customisation. I suggested that the former solution might, if anything, increase sales slightly, while the latter could be tactfully employed to create better awareness for the consumer.

I also would be more than happy to chip in for Gareth so he has a better control system in place.

Thank you very much. I think he has actually dealt with Bethesda before in his work, so that might be helpful. I'll certainly be making the request next time I see him. :)

Like you and the others who have said so, I'd also be happy to contribute to a better control system for Gareth and I'll certainly be doing my bit in trying to get companies to consider making full control customisation available in games where I can. :)

Gareth.

Just read through the entire thread thanks to Gibbos link in GD. Got a lump in my throat and a bit emotional over it all.

You are truely an inspiration. I genuinely hope the devs note this and do something about it. And too note, if a donation was setup I'd happily chip in to you getting a better control system :)

Jake

i totally agree, i have just read the thread from page 1, also signed the petition,
lets hope there is an end result

I think it's great that you still manage to play games giving your disability.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, while I do support the developers allowing such changes, a temporary workaround you may want to consider is a program like Xpadder, Hotkeynet or the like. They allow you to effectively emulate a key using another key, for example you could set it so that right clicking acts as pressing W to move fowards.

Also, have you considered foot pedals? Might help you in some games, if you don't use already :p

Your welcome. :)

I / we sincerely appreciate your efforts. The more help the better.

I had a quick word with him last night. I didn't really get the information I wanted, but what I did find out was quite interesting. He knows of several companies who are actually in the process of developing technologies that would help people with conditions that prevent them from playing games in the 'conventional' manner. One of the things he mentioned was of particular interest; basically, a system which would be used in the way that Gareth uses his mouse but obviously unlike a mouse it is specifically designed for this purpose so it would likely be more customisable and suitable for the needs of people who have a disability. So this is good news for the future, but doesn't solve the current matter of being able to customise all key settings.

On the keymapping, unfortunately he didn't say either way and I won't get to speak to him again for a while now, but he did say that people will listen to ideas if they don't interfere with the workflow in a major way, and I don't think a small change like this would. It's just a matter of getting in touch with the right people, so next time I see him, I'll get some names if I can. :)

Also posted in the EA thread to bump it up, and signed the petition (not sure if I already mentioned that).

Gareth there is a really good program that lets you configure just about anything in the way you want to.
Its abit like xpadder but its called pinnacle game profiler. It has official button setups that you can just download and it also lets you setup the controls yourself.
The thing thats good about this is that it has its own site along with its own forum where there are people that really know how to use it fully and if you ask them they'll do you a setup for the game of your choice (they did for me anyway).
This way you can tell them where you want which buttons and what kind of controller etc and I'm sure someone will do any layout you want on any controller for you.#

Forum link: http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/forum/index.php

Download link: http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/

This may or may not be of use but I thought I'd share it anyway. If someone who knows how to fully utilise this (someone on the pinnacle forum) they'll be able to do any setup you want.:)

So how's it going Gareth, have you had any luck with any of the programs people have suggested. :)

I've also been wondering if you have ever thought about contacting PC Gamer or similar publication in order to raise greater awareness of how important customisation of controls is in all games?.

Maybe you can map the other buttons to the arcade controller you spoke about and use your feet.

arc@css has sent off a few emails to Bethesda and Take 2. I was wondering if you had ever thought about contacting a games magazine like PC Gamer or similar magazines/websites. I was just trying to think of other ways you and us lot here could help get the message across.

I'm starting to wonder if the Toshiba sends signals that these programs can't interpret properly. Is it a five-button mouse that you have? Could turn in to an interesting bit of research for me over the next couple of weeks. :)

I'd be willing to get in touch with a few different publications and developers to bring this to their attention, too. I think it could work out as being quite effective if well-coordinated. :)

^^I was just about to type this. No sense in emailing the same publication multiple times by different people. We need a list of who's out there, choose one each (I'm sure there will be several people here who would help with this) and send away.

What if they wanted to contact you personally Gareth, would this be ok ? would obviously link them to your videos to show that you are legit.

it has 5 buttons on top and 2 on the side. the 2 side buttons work in the programs but i can't press them has they are on the side. the buttons on top own work with it's own software but doesn't work with most games..

thank u mate, that'll be very helpful..

I would try and do some sort of contact with Bethesda on Twitter but I don't know how it's all supposed to work over there :/ Twitter is not really my thing..
Since they are aware of Gareth there and the Kotaku article that was posted (and posted a link to it themselves). Maybe that would be a way to reach the higher ups at Bethesda at least.
