i just got dead space 2 but i'm so disappointed

wow hats off to you gareth, thats amazing, i have mild cerabral palsy myself though only down 1 side so i'm lucky but yeah i play games near enough 1 handed and i thought i had it bad, geez your playing dirt 2 better than me. i'm signing this controller mapping petition now.

great comment on remapping:

I get this completely. I have been a wheelchair for the past 11 years and I wanted to pick up the Microsoft steering wheel because of the force feedback while playing pgr4. But since I can't use my legs and I can't remap the button layout I can't use the paddles for gas and brake. I would like this function in almost all racing games so I can use the steering wheel. I have wanted and still want one but not until they change the option.

Cappa you could use a steering wheel well the pedals u could as im thinking elbows for pressing em down and for the wheel i duno make it super sensitive and use ur wrists in the gaps on the wheel perhaps and try that. Smaller the wheel and pedals the better tho i think.

Yeah that MIGHT BE DOABLE... It comes & goes in wave yesterday was a freakin tsunami. :)

Indeed. I'd like to see it hit 50,000 before you head off to PAX East. Would be something special. :)

Had no replies to any of the emails I sent out to companies. Dunno if I'm being impatient, though. :(

Hi Gareth,

I just wanted to tell you that over here in Germany your story has been picked up by basically all the major gaming related websites, e.g. www.pcgames.de, www.gamestar.de, www.eurogamer.de (amongst at least a dozen smaller sites). But it gets even better. The arguably most influential german news magazine, "Der Spiegel" (comparable to your "The Economist") covered your story as well. Their reaction is the same as it is everywhere else: they have high respect for you as a person and whole-heartedly support your (and Chucks) request for better accessibility in PC and console games. So do I ! You teach us all (gamers, developers, and the unfortunate rest ;)) a lesson here. Thanks for that.

Cheers!

:) willkommen

It is quite amazing how this has all developed from a post on a moderately populated forum and escalated the way it has.

Really is inspiring gareth, may the success lead to other developers making it a standard in all of their games.

Keep it up Gareth!

Wow, thanks for posting this - and well said :)

Gareth, I used to think I was the 0nly gimp that tried my best only to be a bullet pillow. I'm a quad with limited shoulder and bicep, no hands. I kinda know where your coming from, and I've got some ideas that i thought i might post. Probly going to be kinda lengthy but hopefully it's beneficial.
i use a kensington trackball (expert mouse) and if you can move your feet and toes good enough it might be worth it to try and use a foot for the pointer the other foot for a button (probly for walk forward) That frees up your mouth. Ill tell you what i use and let you decide. for my shoot button, i use a little contraption i made. imagine a see-saw, one end resting on my down arrow and the other end has a string attached to it, the string runs to a lil stick that i pull with my mouth. so pull -> string lifts one end of see-saw -> other end mashes down the down arrow -> magic happens :). This would allow you to do 3 things at once, look, move and fire.
other ideas, make the mouse buttons bigger somehow, cut out hard plastic and use double sided tape to stick them together.
if you want one more button, you can slide the keyboard back almost under you chin, then use double sided tape to attach something sturdy to the space bar, or key close to your chin where you can mash it with your chin, perhaps maybe aim down sights.
also have you thought about using something like a pencil to hold in your mouth and type?

if you have any questions just let me know, im full of ideas and I would do almost anything to help a brother out.

I've been attempting to read this thread over the past day or two, but the constant updates and links to other articles have made it a gargantuan task!

After finally finishing the whole thread I find myself taken aback. There's an enormous amount of inspiration packed in the previous 1252 posts, not only due to Gareth's determination to play games despite disability but from the huge response from this community which has ultimately resulted in the message reaching the people that it should. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say it makes me proud to be a member of the OcUK forums.

Gareth, I really look forward to seeing the progress that - with the great support you're getting - I'm confident will continue to be made. It will be absolutely brilliant if there is a solution bourne out of this effort.

Signed.

Just been linked to this thread from another forum, never usually look at this section on here.
Amazing stuff I must say, signing the petition now, good luck!

Aye, it's gratifying to see everyone come together and get something good done. It's heart-warming. :D Next job is: let's all get my mortgage paid off!
