****I lied these aren't the rules we're lookin for****

How did you arrive at that conclusion? OcUK don't sell Kindles at the moment.

Just to finally clarify the rules.

  • 1. No competitor talk!

  • 2. A competitor is defined as a company who sells similar hardware/periphal products to OcUK, which Amazon do and as such Amazon are *NOT* allowed, but a site such a Steam is fine as selling games is not our business.

Simples. :)

The Kindle is made by Amazon, which they're saying isn't allowed to be spoken about...

How ridiculous would it be to be able to talk about the Kindle, but not mention the company who makes it?

Why don't the rules just state that we can talk about games and where to buy them but we can't talk about the hardware from those places.

Surely that would make more sense and would be easier at the end of the day.

For example. Such and such a site has sale on for games. But no mentioning that their hardware is cheaper/in stock etc.

I think a rule of not linking to places (indirectly by linking a game that might be on offer) that sell competing hardware would be fair. Linking to actual competing hardware is an obvious no no.

But asking people not to discuss where there are game offers on or where they might have just bought a game for fear that they might put 2 & 2 together and search for hardware deals elsewhere is frankily a little insulting.
People are not idiots and i'm sure that people already know the names of competing etailers and search for deals if they are looking to possibly save a few quid.
I think that the OcUK forum users have maybe been misjudged, I know I bought a new pc (in parts) from you guys after speaking to people on these forums and getting some advice, even though I could have saved a few quid here and there.
I know and agree there have to be rules, but I really do think this one is more trouble than it's worth.

This is what, from what I gather, the rule was, before Amazons DD service (Why THIS has caused the trouble it has is beyond me),which led to Ace Modder making a thread, and then the kick off.

Agree.

Gaming competitors, regardless if they sell "products" that OcUK sell should be allowed to be mentioned if only that it doesn't promote the "hardware" side.

Because most places sell both nowadays?

I don't see the issue;

  • Do not LINK (as in post a direct LINK to their site) to any website that sells any PC related HARDWARE.
  • Talk of websites that sell other forms of media / items is fine.
  • Don't actively encourage users to go and visit other etailors that offer PC Hardware.

I got GAME from <Link> - Naughty.
I got GAME from Play.com - Fine.
I got GAME from Play.com and you should go their too - Naughty.

Any mention of getting hardware elsewhere should be a rule for across the board.

Well it's a "Don't talk about stuff OcUK sells - everything else is fine." so Amazon and Kindle is fine, but linking or discussing an Amazon pre-order for Battlefield 3, for instance, is disallowed because OcUK sell the exact same product.

Further clarification can be added if needed: "To further clarify, prohibited deals are those that offer products that exactly match the ones sold by OcUK. So, discussing deals for digitally downloaded software is fine as OcUK does not currently offer this type of service; whereas discussing deals for hardcopies that are also sold by OcUK is not allowed."

Sorry, I forgot my rolleyes emote. :(

I'm 100% with you.

Originally it was "OcUK sell games, this new Amazon DD service will be a competitor to our 6 games, BANNED", I think they've realised the stupidity of that and backtracked on it, but still want to ban Amazon while ignoring the fact that it would mean banning a load of other sites as well.

Looks good to me.

But the kindle thread has a direct thread to Amazon and is allowed, why should games be different? The end result is the same, a link to Amazon.

That's where it becomes even more ridiculous. Really, what's the difference between saying "game from Amazon" and posting the link? It's going to result in people going to Amazon's site either way, it's not like the lack of a link means no one will go and have a look. Everyone here is well aware of the fact that other sites sell computer hardware, banning talking about them will make no difference.

With them browsing, means they might see some cheaper hardware they wanted, potentially worse :p
