i5 3570K quick test.

I believe it is less than a 20W saving.
Basically, the power usage difference between SB and IB are almost the same.

Now, for laptop owners, even a small saving will be important, but for desktop users, power consumption will make little difference.

Agreed.

Looking at the big picture, a few watts saving amongst a million PC users can make a difference. To an individual, not a lot. To an individual nutter ;), I mean overclocker, even less !

It's a bit like not leaving your TV in standby. Most modern flatscreen TVs are designed to use less than 1 watt in standby (might be much less than that on some models). "Don't leave your TV in standby !" they say. Well yes, it kind of makes sense, but how much energy would be saved if they didn't keep trying to sell more and more new models every 5 minutes ? And how much energy would be saved if cheap consumer electronics was made a little more reliable (and repairable) ? Lots. Problem with that is that lots of jobs would be lost.

In fact, if Intel had not launched IB, and stuck with SB, would all those extra 10-20 watts/hour being used be more or less than the energy being used to produce/deliver/install the newer CPUs ?

There's a thought for a dull Friday afternoon. Probably makes it even duller :D.

jwsg, if other retailers want to release the prices of products before the release of the products themselves, what is is wrong with this?

In USA, they already have the pricing set, so I don't see anything wrong with UK retailers releasing the pricing. I really do wonder why Intel do not want the prices to be leaked. What is the secret? Are the prices so obscene that they want to keep them secret for as long as possible.

I've never seen such secrecy with regards to UK pricing before.
It's only 48 hours to go anyway, so its not big deal now.

I'm assuming the delay has been due to gettng stock levels up and even now full quantities won't be around till June. There's always a newness factor but I'd heard it was i7K lower on stock (almost to the point of being in constraint) so I'm surprised i5K is looking like being the more overpriced.

A sale is a sale so while IB is ramping Intel will be quite happy to sell a SB - whether they are still making them I have no idea. The dollar price on slides show Intel doesn't believe there ought to be a SB IB price difference - and I think it's the same every year - more for the same price. Who's creating the big price difference then?
